RUN
This week, Dana is traveling to a work conference, so we take a break from racing and interviews to talk about training. But don’t worry, we have more great interviews coming to you in May!
It’s a training week for us, so we took a Medal Chasers 5K to our neighborhood for our long run this past weekend. Bill and Kristina are in Nashville running a race, so they are handling the runcationing this week in style!
We talk about the medal and bib and our strategy for the 5K. Bill and Kristina Craig, founders of Medal Chasers, have been on our show. We are big fans of running their virtual races as training runs to stay motivated during training season and support a great cause. The “Punisher” 5K, focused on one of the most tortured anti-heroes, is one from the Medal Chasers Anti-Hero series. We wanted to have a great-themed short run as a final one ahead of our trip to Jacksonville to run the Mother’s Day 5K for the Donna Foundation. We were so excited to do this race to support Shriners Hospital for Children. As always, the bling did not disappoint. Right now, there are some fun virtual races offered on their connected to Star Wars, Marvel, and more!
EAT
Sometimes when we drive to races throughout Florida, we accidentally find some great food when we make a stop to fuel up on the road—wondering what we eat on the drive back home from Jacksonville? We hit Saint Augustine and found a food truck park right on the water. One of the trucks, the Funkadelic Food Shack, had great options to try. If you are in Jacksonville for any reason, and you have a chance to steal a couple of hours to go to Saint Augustine and see historical sights there, you can enjoy a great lunch by the water. We recommend anything with their sweet potato and quinoa fritters, but their burgers and tacos sound great too!!
DRINK
We share a non-alcoholic version of a cocktail Aimee loves this week, the Lemon Drop Martini. We got the recipe from www.frewines.com, and they call it Sugar Kisses. We are so happy that we can have a great-tasting wine that is nonalcoholic!? And they make all kinds: red, white, blush, and bubbly, too! We promised that this year we’d get more into wine. And, we will get into the alcoholic kind after our challenge is over! In the meantime, we share this recipe and our review with you.
Of course, you can create a genuine Lemon Drop with a traditional recipe with vodka. Here’s one from Ina Garden on the Food Network Website: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/lemon-drop-cocktail-recipe-1941226

Today on the show, we are so honored to be joined by Amby Burfoot, 1968 Boston Marathon winner, writer-editor, and book author. Amby talks about his Boston victory in this interview, but that is not all. On this, the anniversary of the Boston Marathon in 1972, when women were officially allowed to register and run, he talks about women at the Boston Marathon and the influential role women play in the sport. He was so generous with his time! We thank him for sitting down to talk with us, and we're wishing him a fantastic run in Boston this Marathon Monday!

RUN
This week, we share a conversation with Amanda Napolitano about a brand new race that supports the Donna Foundation, the Black Knight DONNA Mother’s Day 5K, which you can run in person or virtually.
According to a recent press release, the foundation is celebrating moms in various ways in the month leading up to the race. The Runcation Nation can support these efforts by:
- Registering to run or walk in the Black Knight DONNA Mother’s Day 5K. Participants will take off on a brand-new DONNA 5K route through Jacksonville’s beautiful Riverside neighborhood, starting and ending at the historic Friday Musicale. With its new hybrid format, runners can choose to gather “Together” in person or run virtually throughout the weekend. Register at mdyw.breastcancermarathon.com.
Runcation Nation, you can go to https://mdyw.breastcancermarathon.com. You
can be a part of it virtually or in person, and there’s a discount
code exclusively for all of you. Use RUNEATDRINK for 5% off an
entry for either physical or virtual race option.
- Honoring your mom by posting a photo to the DONNA Tribute Wall presented by Florida Blue. Follow The DONNA Foundation on social media for stories celebrating moms over the coming weeks. Share your photo at mdyw.breastcancermarathon.com/donna-tribute-wall.
- Contributing to the “Every Mom” gift challenge by making a donation to support the critical programs of The DONNA Foundation, starting a fundraiser, or joining an existing fundraising team. Organizations can go the extra mile by hosting a fundraiser in partnership with their place of business. Give or fundraise at support.thedonnafoundation.org/goto/celebratemoms.
- Talking with the moms in your life about breast health. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 5-10% of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary. Discussing your family’s breast cancer history with relatives and medical providers is an essential step toward monitoring, managing, and maintaining your breast health.
- Joining the conversation about moms and breast cancer on Wednesday, April 13, at 7 p.m. The DONNA Foundation will host a webinar panel discussion focusing on the most impactful ways to support moms through their breast cancer journey. The conversation will feature Kristin Lothman, a mindfulness counselor from Mayo Clinic, and breast cancer survivors Kristie Kirschner, Michelle Mecca, and Leah Strommer. Our Noisy Cancer Comeback Announcer and breast cancer survivor Fitz Koehler will facilitate it. It will be streamed live at Facebook.com/26.2withDONNA.
- Partnering with The DONNA Foundation to become a sponsor of the 2022 Black Knight DONNA Mother’s Day 5K event. Sponsors and vendors have opportunities to maximize brand exposure locally, regionally, and nationwide to a unique demographic are available. Companies can also sponsor race registrations for employees. Learn more at mdyw.breastcancermarathon.com/become-a-sponsor-2022.
Thank you, Amanda, for taking the time to talk with us. Runcation Nation, don’t forget you can go to www.runeatdrink.net/donna. EAT & DRINK
We asked Amanda about the best brunch options in Jacksonville for the Mother’s Day weekend. She shared one close to the racecourse, she shared Prospect, and the menu looks AMAZING! There are menu items and beverages that are tempting parts of their brunch, and the regular menu looks mouth-watering, too!

How about a bonus cocktail?
DRINK
We return to Casa Santo Stefano in Tampa for this Quick Bite. We first talked about this restaurant, rich with historical roots in Tampa, in episode 142. Last week, when we recapped the 2022 Gasparilla Distance Classic, we recalled a past trip through Tampa when we returned to this enticing location for a great meal and a cocktail.
Casa Santo Stefano has great cocktail selections. We wanted to try wine from their beautiful upstairs wine cellar. It was so hard to choose. We promise to return for wine, but we couldn’t pass up another tasty cocktail. While we were there, we had the Tramonto and recorded our review live. It was a Sicilian twist on a whiskey sour made with Lip Service Rye and topped with Nero d’Avola wine from Sicily.
We hope you enjoy this flashback!

RUN
2022 Gate River Run in Jacksonville, Florida, was one we had not planned on getting to, but Barbara DiGirolamo (@babz019 on Instagram), who we were lucky to meet and get to know at the Donna Marathon Weekend 2022, convinced us we needed to get there. The experience did not disappoint. Jacksonville residents came out to support and cheer on the runners in this National Championship at the 15K distance. We experienced a great expo, a well-supported course, and the “green monster.” Would we do it again? We discuss all that and more in this episode.
EAT
Prati Italia was our restaurant of choice when carb-loading for this 15K race. The Prati Italia food menu has so many tasty options! We can’t wait to go back and try everything, including the deep-fried lasagna that we saw come to a table. It made our mouths water! They had a beautiful restaurant with an open kitchen, a beautiful setting inside or by the water, and a full vegan menu for us to sample, too! We talk about it in this episode. Special thanks to the hostess (whose name we did not catch) who found seating for us, even though we accidentally made our reservation the next night when we meant to make it for the night before the race). Big thanks and praise to our server Cassidy, who was knowledgeable about everything on the menu and gave us a first-class experience. Get here if you can to try their menu, whether regular, vegan, or vegetarian. And ask for Cassidy!
DRINK
Prati Italia’s specialty non-alcoholic drinks were a welcome surprise when perusing the drink menu. We can’t wait to get back and try their extensive cocktail list that includes cleverly named beverages like the “Frankly Speaking” and “Walk Don’t Run.” The night before the race, though, we were so happy with the handmade sodas we got to try.
THAT’S A WRAP!
On the food and beverage front, Prati Italia is a winner! Make a reservation, get there, and enjoy! Let us know what you have if you do!

Bougie Palmer: Tito’s Handmade vodka, lemon, and peach oolong lavender syrup

And we recorded our reviews live we wrapped up our meal. We can’t wait to go back to Bulla Gastrobar in Tampa. If you are ever near one, trust us and check out Bulla Gastrobar. They have locations in Florida, Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina!

RUN
While some of you were running or cheering on your fellow runners at Princess Half Marathon Weekend in Orlando, we were at Gasparilla Distance Classic this past February. We returned to try out a new race distance for us- the 8K- and to hear two race announcers near and dear to our hearts, even though they had not met us yet… Team Noisy! Fitz Koehler and Rudy Novotny. PLUS, we got to see Meb again, too!
We had such a great time and even ran into some friends in the Runcation Nation and spent some time catching up with them on the racecourse. (Thanks, Lee (@itsyourturnlee), for hanging with us for a bit on the course!
EAT
Bulla Gastrobar was our restaurant of choice to explore great food in the Tampa area close to the start of our race. We love great Spanish food. This place was tasty. Make a reservation! Bulla Gastrobar is a busy place with fantastic service and tasty tapas. Did we mention the paella? And dessert? Everything about our experience was top-notch. Stop by if you get the chance! We sampled everything live and recorded our reactions.
DRINK
Bulla Gastrobar has an extensive cocktail menu as well. Another great reason to visit this restaurant... delicious drinks. We both had a couple of cocktails to celebrate our accomplishment because we had taken advantage of a rideshare service to get there.

EAT
Time for soup, salad, and sides at Hollywood Brown Derby! Hollywood Brown Derby is famous for its Cobb Salad. Yes, we had that, but we also had incredible soup and sides. We talked about them while we enjoyed them in the restaurant. We share our reactions on the show this week with you. (It makes us want to go back as soon as possible!)
DRINK
Hollywood Brown Derby has an extensive cocktail list. We had the Derby cocktail and shared our thoughts as we sampled it for the first time during our meal. You know how we love bourbon. Rose and Crown is a place that has excellent appetizers and entrees. We sampled the UK Cheese Platter, Scotch Egg, Fish and Chips, and Shepard’s Pie. At Rose and Crown, you will have excellent service and a delicious meal. Plus, you also get to experience a fantastic view of the water!
DRINK
Rose and Crown is home to a fantastic bar we have been to many a time. Before the pandemic, it was packed with people celebrating and experiencing the quintessential England bar right here at Epcot in Walt Disney World in Florida. This time we sampled beverages while grabbing our lunch. Cider and Fireball? Yes, please! Guinness? We could not say no. And it was all worthy of a toast!

February is RunDisney Princess Marathon Weekend time! While we did not go to run the races, we went the weekend before to wish the members of the Runcation Nation good luck in their Orlando races. This week, we talk to the This Dis Life Podcast host, Marc Valentine. He says we inspired him to train for and run his first 5K. We find out how it went.
If you want a taste of Disney at home, check out Marc’s show at https://www.thisdislifepodcast.com. Check out his YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/thisdislife, too!
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, Marc, and congratulations on your first 5K. Here’s to many more races!
EAT
This week, we talk about our very first visit to Epcot’s Festival of the Arts, too! It’s our first time, but we don’t think it will be our last. Hear our thoughts as we sample the food live at the festival! Our favorite offering was the Encanto Cocina offering authentic Columbian cuisine and celebrating the movie, Encanto.
DRINK
Oh, yes, we indulged in some great alcoholic beverages at Epcot’s Festival of the Arts, too. There were some great beer offerings and some surprising dessert drinks to try! Hear our live reactions as we try some of our new favorites from Artist’s Table including a beer flight and a flight of sipping chocolates with liqueurs, too!

RUN
Bill and Kristina Craig, founders of Medal Chasers, have been on our show before. We are big fans of running their virtual races as training runs to stay motivated during training season and support a great cause. The “I’m With You ’Til The End of the Line” 5K, celebrating Winter Soldier, is from the Medal Chasers Anti-Hero series. We wanted to have a themed short run as a final one ahead of our trip to Shamrock Marathon Weekend to run the 8K there and meet up with fellow podcasters and other members of the Runcation Nation. We were so excited to do this race to support Shriners Hospital for Children. As always, the bling did not disappoint. Right now, there are some fun virtual races offered on their connected to Star Wars, Marvel, and more!
EAT
This week, we were in the mood for comfort food while at the same time wanting to stay true to our plant-based plan. So, we used two of our favorite products to create a version of linguine bolognese. The first comes from Banza, which is a chickpea pasta. The second is Impossible, but it is not the plant-based burgers they are known for but the meat crumbles that combine with our favorite marinara to create a fantastic sauce. Use your favorite marinara or make your own, and presto! We even used our beverage in the recipe (link is also below). Here are our Amazon Affiliate links to the products. (Clicking them gives you access on Amazon, costs nothing extra, and if you order from them, you help support our podcast.):
Banza Linguine: https://amzn.to/3hOOqWL
Impossible Linguine: https://amzn.to/3hSsOJ4
Fre Merlot: https://amzn.to/3MB2h12
We even topped it with a “parmesan” sprinkle that tasted amazing, thanks to a recipe from Cookie and Kate.
We have shared the recipe over on www.patreon.com/runeatdrinkpodcast. So, if you’d like to recreate a fantastic carb-loading plant-based meal that you’d mistake for having real meat, check it out there!
DRINK
We share a non-alcoholic version of a cocktail we love this week, the Old Fashioned. We got the recipe from www.frewines.com. Who knew we could have a great-tasting wine that is non-alcoholic!? And they make all kinds: red, white, blush, and bubbly, too! We promised that this year we’d get more into wine. And, we will get into the alcoholic kind after our challenge is over! In the meantime, we share this recipe and our live review with you. Of course, you can create a classic Old Fashioned with one of our favorite liquors, bourbon. You can check out previous episodes where we sampled some great ones during our recent “runcations.”

Special thank you to all our patrons! We have been able to expand our studio and keep the show going over the last year and a half.
Race announcer at the weekend wanted to shout out the more than 250 male and female breast cancer survivors out there on the course, many of whom are still in chemo and other treatments while tackling this weekend’s events.
Facebook friend Judy Gerber wanted to shout out her husband Dean. Her husband wanted to shout out Judy as well. They both completed the Donna Marathon and Judy is a 15-year survivor as well!
This week, as we recap the final race in our challenge during our Donna Marathon Weekend experience, we shout out Jessica, Kelly, Josh, Dawn, Susie, and Joanne. The experience would not have been the same without you. They all sent us feedback shouting out our marathoners for completing 26.2 miles in the less than optimal conditions that weekend. Everyone in the group wanted to shout out Josh for completing his first 5K and Half Marathon this weekend. JoJo said we all needed a shoutout for coming together and completing our races. We can’t thank everyone enough for their participation, both in-person and virtual. Our first major Runcation Nation meetup was amazing!
To all our patrons, we can’t express how much it means to us. Your support is appreciated from the bottom of our hearts.

RUN
Our Donna Marathon Weekend coverage continues with the Runcation Nation participating in the Half Marathon and Marathon events on Sunday. This race weekend supports The DONNA Foundation in its mission to help those fighting breast cancer as well as furthering research to end the disease. The support throughout Jacksonville was back. We met new friends all along the course, and despite the weather we found every reason that we love to return to this weekend back in full force! We were so happy to do this race with our Runcation Nation crew who came to meet up with us. It was such a fun experience. The neighborhoods came out to support in spite of weather. The after-party was full of volunteers ready to celebrate with food and beverage. We loved Fitz Koehler, our race announcer and a cancer survivor herself, who made the experience great, too!
EAT
This week’s food and beverage came from a fantastic recommendation. Our local friends, Mike and Andi Sharp of the Bouncy Hunters (a group that raises money for The DONNA Foundation) recommended Burrito Gallery in the Jax Beach area, and it was SO GOOD!! Shout out to Claudia, an amazing employee who helped us navigate the menu and end up with a burrito bursting with flavor as well as a tasty trio of tacos, and churros that were filled with caramel goodness and could not be missed.
DRINK
Burrito Gallery has a full bar and you can sit at the bar for full service or order from the counter and get your food plus tasty original cocktails delivered to your table anywhere in the restaurant. We had a Mezcal Old Fashioned and a house margarita that did not disappoint. There are also great local beers on tap to choose from here, too.
All-in-all, Burrito Gallery is top notch. Get there when you visit the Jax Beach area in Florida.

Our Donna Marathon Weekend coverage continues with the 5K on Saturday. This race weekend supports The DONNA Foundation in its mission to help those fighting breast cancer as well as furthering research to end the disease. The 5K is back after a two-year hiatus and there was a bonus event, the 15K Relay, too, happening on the same course at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. This race was a great tour of some sights in the downtown Jacksonville area close to one of our favorite breweries, Intuition Ale Works. The murals in this area are unique, too. The medal includes the signature running breast cancer ribbon. We were so happy to do this race with our Runcation Nation crew who came to meet up with us. It was such a fun experience. We loved Fitz Koehler, our race announcer and a cancer survivor herself, who made the experience great, too!
EAT
V Pizza gave us a fantastic meal while we were in Jacksonville. They have several locations. We headed to the one right on Jacksonville Beach and that we would pass during our half marathon race over the weekend. We had great pasta, wings, and calzone offerings from the menu. The pizzas looked great from that wood fire oven, too! They were slammed on a Saturday night. It’s great thing to see at a local joint, and a good reminder that you want to allot some extra time when exploring new places around town on a race weekend.
DRINK
Flask and Cannon provides the libations for this V Pizza location in the Jacksonville Beach area. If you are feeling a tiki drink vibe, this place has you covered. There are beverages from groups and individual tiki drinks in fantastic glassware, too! Can’t wait to Uber or Lyft back there after a race to really imbibe.
THAT’S A WRAP!

RUN
Donna Marathon Weekend starts off on Friday with the Social Shakeout Run. It is an opportunity to meet two of the founders of this race, Jeff Galloway and Donna Deegan. It is a nice and easy 5K through part of the Jacksonville Beach neighborhoods that will host the half marathon, full marathon, and ultra races during the weekend. There are so many people we met who have supported The DONNA Foundation in their mission to find a cure through breast cancer research and support those fighting the disease and their families. It is the kind of event that sets the tone for the weekend, as we say every year. It was even better experiencing it with two members of our Runcation Nation, Josh and Dawn. Thank you for making the start to the weekend so much fun.
EAT
We were with our crew at Reve Brewing. It is the home of some unique brews and Bones Pizza. We had appetizers, pizzas, and desserts that were so flavorful. The House Bread with pesto sauce was a great starter. The Caesar salad was yummy as well.Their pizzas are so flavorful. We had one with fig, proscuitto, and balsamic glaze. There were so many with the perfect combination of flavors. We would come back again to try more of their unique creations.
DRINK
Reve Brewing has hazy, sour, and imperial beer. Plus all things slushees with beer. We had to try a few selections. Their flavors are true to the styles they are drawn to create. There are shorter pours to try, rather than flights, so you can have just enough of what you want to try. Their taproom is unique and inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Stop by if you are in the Jacksonville area.

Bill and Kristina Craig, founders of Medal Chasers, have been on our show before. We are big fans of running their virtual races as training runs to stay motivated during training season and support a great cause. The “I Am Worthy” Half Marathon, celebrating Thor, is one from the Medal Chasers Assemble series that we held onto for a while because we hadn’t had a training run that was the length of a half marathon in a while. Our final one in preparation for the Donna Marathon Weekend is just that so it was a perfect chance to support Ava’s Avengers and earn a really awesome medal.
EAT
La Luce at Signia by Hilton Bonnet Creek is an amazing Italian Restuarant that we visited during our weekend in Orlando during the 2022 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend 10K in January. Ricardo, our server was truly amazing. He was so friendly and knowledgeable. We had a flavorful meal including a great appetizer and two hearty carb-loading meals that we can’t wait to get back and have again in the near future.
DRINK
La Luce at Signia by Hilton Bonnet Creek also has an excellent bar, a huge selection of wine from their extensive wine cellar, and creative cocktails, too. We each had a single cocktail.. not because we didn’t want more… we totally did, but these were so delicious and we had to savor every nuance of these hand-crafted beverages.
Trust us, you want to go to this restaurant.

RUN
2022 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend 10K was our race of choice when returning to this weekend after many years. Our goal was to enjoy the weekend and have a blast with as many fellow runners as we could, but also enjoy the time after the race when exploring and indulging without having a second race to complete this time.
EAT
Bull and Bear at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando had a serving team Toni, Jeff, and Javier that took care of our table, and this team knew exactly what we needed and anticipated our every request. Antoine, assistant manager, was very attentive to our table and all others. You can tell that service is an art and a science they have mastered here. From our appetizers and salads to our entrees and dessert, this was a meal for the ages. Yes, we would call this place one for a very special occasion and a more upscale meal. Reservations, you should make them. We had enough food to feed an army, and each morsel was one to be savored. It is a steak dinner with sides to rival the best steakhouses in the country. We break down what we had this week to celebrate our return to Marathon Weekend .
DRINK
Bull and Bear at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando has an incredible cocktail menu. Was there an Old Fashioned? Of course. So you know we had to have it. It was served complete with a table-side show! That was not the only cocktail we sampled that night. Tune in to hear about other tasty beverages, too!

Just in case our travel prep gets in the way of a Wednesday night Live Chat, we wanted to makes sure you had something in your podcast feed from us to get you excited about the coming weekend, whether you are joining us in Jacksonville, running virtually, or you are our cheer squad for the weekend form wherever you are. We will see you soon from Jacksonville!
The 2019 Donna Marathon Weekend started with a Social Shakeout Run on Friday. It was a 5k to get us going for the fun weekend of running ahead, but it also gave us the chance to sit down with three incredible people who started this race weekend. It was such an honor to talk with these three and learn how this weekend got its roots. Thank you so much to Amanda Napolitano, Executive Director of the Donna Foundation, who arranged this time for us to chat!
Donna Deegan is the Chief Eternal Optimist of the Donna Marathon Weekend and the Donna Foundation. Dr. Edith Perez is a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic. Finally, a fantastic friend of our podcast and America’s Coach, Jeff Galloway, is the one who suggested that Donna start it all when they spotted each other at an Expo for the Gate River Run. They talk about the history of the race, the advancements in research and the families it has supported, and the reasons this weekend is a must-do and such a special race weekend.
It is one that we plan to do every year to honor those we have lost to breast cancer, but also to experience one of the best running block parties we have ever been to in our running career!
To find out about the race weekend, go to www.breastcancermarathon.com, and to support the foundation go to www.thedonnafoundation.org.
