RUN
As we said last week, Dana is injured, so Aimee had to run this week’s race on her own! Aimee chose the Freedom 5K in Cape Coral because it had a bridge on the course and needed to incorporate some bridge work before the Anchorage RunFest! It was a morning race, so there was a beautiful view over the water as the sun came up. It was very hot and humid, so hydration was key! They had one water stop setup and it was available twice on this out and back course, so that was great. It was a safe and well-managed course. The bridge was steep but it was great to get some of that work into training because hill work is hard to come by in Florida! The shirt was great - a dark green one with an American Flag in the middle of a star as the logo. The swag bag... of course Aimee’s favorite part was the free pint card inside from Big Storm Brewing! It was a great way to support the military museum in town and to get some key training in ahead of our half marathon in August.
EAT
We went to Danger Danger in Cape Coral because we want to continue to celebrate the awesome business independent small business owners who are bringing such amazing food to our hometown. We had their Falafel Burger which is a crispy chickpea patty with a chimichurri and a yum yum sauce on it, pickled onion, arugula, and a wheat roll. AND it is 100% Vegan! It was so good and a great option when we want to stay Vegan during the week.
We had their Danger Dog as well. This is a hot dog and as it was the 4th of July, we wanted to celebrate with an All-American day meal with the Danger Danger twist. It was a bacon-wrapped hot dog with pinto beans, avocado, pick, chipotle mayo, and jalapeño on a bun. So good!
DRINK
We went to Fort Myers Brewing Company to end our 4th of July weekend. True, we featured this brewery on Episode #41 when we talked to Joel Germain and he took us through a great flight of beer after we ran the Cops and Joggers 5k, but they have so many great brews at this brewery and we are so happy to see that they are expanding to include a new food truck space, tasting hall, manufacturing and packaging facility, and private event space. We had to go back and try more of their vast and ever-expanding menu of original beers!
Aimee had these beers:
Key Lime Wheat 5%
Lime Shake Berliner 4%
Tart Like a Tiger 3.2%
Caramel Strong 9.2%

RED Episode #69: Your Running Mantras, Point 57, & Big Storm Brewing Category 3

RED Episode #69
RUN
We asked: What are your running mantras when things get challenging on a run or during a period of injury? You submitted some great feedback. We share and discuss what keeps you going when things get tough.
EAT
It was a training week for us, so we explored and indulged in a local restaurant, Point 57, right here in Cape Coral. We were there for brunch, but they also have the regular menu available all day. Aimee had the Cast Iron Ribeye with a blue cheese fondue in a skillet served with an onion, green bean and bacon hash. Dana had the Crispy Pork Shank with blue cheese grits and apple chutney. So tasty!
DRINK
At Point 57, there are some pretty tasty cocktails and local brews on tap. Aimee had the Dead on Bourbon, which is worth ordering for the presentation in a smoking skull, rye whiskey, coffee flavors, and a bit of spice. The Summertime in Mexico is tasty as well. Tequila, spiced pear, cardamom, lemon, honey, and maple make this a refreshing and unique cocktail on a hot day. Dana had Islamorada Sandbar Sunday, which made us recall the trip we took to their taproom last October.
Yes, we also had a great time this weekend at Big Storm celebrating the release of their Category 3 Belgian Trippel. Thanks to everyone who was able to join us live! At 9.5 ABV, the darker golden body and strength of Cat 3 is far and away heavier than Category 1, and vastly different from Category 2, with its dried fruit notes and darker body. We also got a bonus release to try, Bromosa Tangerine Brut IPA. Yep, Aimee loved it! Shocking! Tangerine flavor with a bit of hop but not too much on the end of the sip, it was not overly sweet, but the fruit aroma and flavor were just right for a hot Florida day.
Happy 4th of July this week! Are you running in a great 4th of July race? Let us know about it so we can shout you out next week. And let us know, like we said in the show, where you find a great steak, too! Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. Or you can call at 941- 677-2733.

RUN
In this episode, we talk about training challenges and how to overcome them. Then we ask for your feedback and how you overcome training challenges because in this training week, Dana is coming back from injury and starting back to training slowly. At the same time, Aimee had a long run distance of 14 miles in the heat and humidity of the Florida summer, which presents its own challenges that we all encounter and need to overcome at some point in a training cycle.
EAT
My cameraman had a work trip to Huntsville a couple of weeks ago. We spent some time around some amazing exhibits at the US Space and Rocket Center. We stayed near the Von Braun Center and Big Spring International Park, which was a great park to run in right outside our hotel.
Huntsville has their own Craft Beer Trail that incorporates the fantastic breweries and tap houses we had the opportunity to visit.
We flash back to our visit to Below the Radar Brewhouse, where we had some tasty brews and some out of this world Fish and Chips for lunch when we visited the Brewhouse. I actually thought the fish and chips were the stars of our visit. Flaky white fish perfectly cooked and battered in beer batter that was crunchy, a little salty, and perfect with a hit of malt vinegar. It is on the heavier side as an entree, so we would recommend it as a dinner item or to split it if you are having it for lunch, but it is delicious no matter what the time of day.
DRINK
We had a flight of six original beers while we had the meal and actually saw the brewing process in action while we ate.
The beers I had were:
Imperial Brown (Brown Ale) 8% ABV
Baltic Porter By Robo, Andrew, Alex, and Clint 7.6% ABV
Mild Thang (English Mild Ale) 3.5% ABV
Strange Wilderness (American Imperial Stout) 9.2% ABV
Voodoo Mary Belgian Dubbel 8% ABV
Mossy Oats Stout (Oatmeal Stout) 7% ABV

RUN
This is the first in a series of 3 summer 5Ks in our runDisney Virtual Race Series. This first medal is in honor of Captain Marvel! We have chosen to run it in our favorite places around Walt Disney World: Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and the Boardwalk.
EAT
Boardwalk Bakery was a great way to get some coffee and a bite to eat before starting our 5K. Their hot breakfast sandwiches and tasty coffee were just the right fuel to get our inner super heroes ready for our race. The Butter Butter and Ooey Gooey Breakfast Sandwiches were so good!
While we were at Disney, we went to Sanaa Lounge in the Animal Kingdom Lodge for a bite after completing our 5K. There we had the Indian-Style Bread Service and it was amazing! We got all five breads: Traditional Naan, Garlic-Ginger Naan, Spiced Naan, Onion Kulcha, or Paneer Paratha. And of course we got all nine sauces: Cucumber Raita, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, Mango Chutney, Tomato-Date Jam, Tamarind Chutney, Coriander Chutney, Garlic Pickle, Red Chile Sambal, and Spicy Jalapeño-Lime Pickle. Plus a super spicy bonus one that Joe, our bartender brought us when he heard we like spicy sauces. Awesome!
DRINK
Woody’s Lunchbox in Toy Story Land has a Grown Up’s Lemonade with Vodka, Lemonade, and Black Cherry Purée! Refreshing! But also, if it is too early, there are nonalcoholic options like Cold Brew Joffrey’s Coffee.
At Sanaa Lounge we had the Safari Amber Ale and Tusker Premium Lager imported from Kenya. Both beers were refreshing. The Safari Amber Ale was a red ale with a malty character and no bitterness. The Tusker Premium Lager was a light yellow and super refreshing citrus flavor. Both were nice choices on a hot day!

QUICK BITE: INNER SPACE BREWING COMPANY
My cameraman had a work trip to Huntsville a couple of weeks ago. We spent some time around some amazing exhibits at the US Space and Rocket Center. We stayed near the Von Braun Center and Big Spring International Park, which was a great park to run in right outside our hotel.
Huntsville has their own Craft Beer Trail that incorporates the fantastic breweries and tap houses we had the opportunity to visit. So many that we could not cover them all on the episodes.
In this Quick Bite, we flash back to our visit at Inner Space Brewing Company. Owners Daniel and Nicole Wallace were there and so great to talk to about their original brews! They are so knowledgeable and can recommend just the right beer for you.
We did not have to get a flight because we could just order a 5-ounce pour of whatever they had on tap. They even had a beer slushie we could try!
We tried these original brews:
- Leila Lager 5.5%
- STS Rye Saison 5.5%
- Key Lime Gose 5.5%
- Andromeda Stout 7%
- White Star Wheat 5%
- Pub Ale 4.75%
- Dark Skies 8%
- Blueberry Milkshake 4.75%
One of my favorites was the Key Lime Gose! They were all flavorful and worth the trip!
We are so glad we went and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

QUICK BITE: GREEN BUS BREWING
My cameraman had a work trip to Huntsville a couple of weeks ago. We spent some time around some amazing exhibits at the US Space and Rocket Center. We stayed near the Von Braun Center and Big Spring International Park, which was a great park to run in right outside our hotel.
Huntsville has their own Craft Beer Trail that incorporates the fantastic breweries and tap houses we had the opportunity to visit. So many that we could not cover them all on the episodes.
In this Quick Bite, we recap Green Bus Brewing. We did a live broadcast from there. We had flights of their tasty original beers, but did you know that they also make meads, ciders, and their own beer cheese with two of their own brews?
We tried these in flights:
Tiramisu Milk Stout
Twickenham London Porter
Dominant Red
Camper Van Blonde
Downtown Julie Brown
Their beer cheese is made with their Big Spring IPA and Camper Van Blonde. It was sharp, cheesy, and tangy from the beer. A must when visiting!
Their meads, Spiced Orange at 16% and Earl Grey at 14%, pack a PUNCH! But they are tasty, too!
Their tap room is so cool too. Such nice and knowledgeable people are behind the bar. Wood floors on two different levels, the brewing setup is upstairs and it is also extra seating or what could be a great place to have meetings. They have the front of a VW Bus over their bar on the first floor and walls that incorporate some beautiful brick.
We are so glad we went and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

RUN
As we have said before, we are following Jeff Galloway’s training plan to prepare for our half marathon at the Anchorage RunFest in August. We are e-coaching clients of his and this week, instead of a long run, we were working on half miles and trying to hit a target in a certain time. We did 6 half miles, but the heat and humidity in Florida is really a challenge at this time of year and we made the mistake of starting a bit too late in the morning. We did pour ice water over our heads, as Jeff suggested, and it did help, but while the mileage was around the times that Jeff wanted us to hit, I was slow this week, and I am still a work in progress. I am sure the work with Cadence Drills, Acceleration Gliders, and quarter and half miles along with the long runs will get us there. So my lesson in all of this is: don’t get frustrated with short-term setbacks, and start earlier in the morning because it is a Florida summer after all.
EAT
Since this was a training week, we decided to try a new food truck that was making its debut at No. 3 Craft Brews, Hunger Station. It was some great Mediterranean food. We had Shawarma Fries with a garlic aioli and Falafel Wraps with spicy red sauce. We really wanted the grape leaves but they were out by the time we got to them. But they will be back and making more appearances around Southwest Florida. So, if you love Mediterranean food, you should check them out. They were so nice and let us try samples of the Shawarma while we tried to decide what to order because everything looked and smelled great. They are a fairly new food truck. We can’t wait for them to get their food truck decked out with their logo so we can easily spot them at No. 3 or wherever they might be to snag the grape leaves!
DRINK
Big Storm Brewing Company has a series of beer dedicated to making the best of hurricane season and their release schedule starts on the first day of that season. We had a live beer chat dedicated to trying Category 1 Belgian Single, which is their first release. We talk about it on this episode as well. It has a nice yellow body and it is a bit cloudy. It reminds us of a Hoegaarden with its banana and clove notes, but we get more clove than banana out of this one. I think it is on the higher end of sessionable beers.

RED Episode #65: Ice Cream 5K , Big Ray’s Fish Camp, & 81Bay Brewing
Tuesday May 28, 2019
Tuesday May 28, 2019
RUN
We did the Ice Cream 5K at Al Lopez Park plus mileage to get to 10 total for this week’s long run. It was the same place that our cameraman went to do the Tampa Beer Run last week and the site of our first episode. But we went back because I could not go last week and because that park is incredible in terms of its course and shade to get some high mileage in that we were assigned this week. We got 5 in before the race started and then we were off on the 5K to get an unexpected medal and free ice cream!
We saw a lot of families that participated in the 5K and kids races. There were two ice cream trucks for us to choose from when we got our free cup of ice cream, and the cherry ice cream from Sunny’s Nitro Ice Cream was awesome after our first 8 miles in the park. Then we finished our last two miles and we were off to refuel!
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU, TOO! In the coming weeks, we will be talking about virtual races and what we think of them. So, email us at info@runeatdrink.net or call and leave us a message at 941- 677-2733. Let us know what your thoughts are about virtual races you’ve done or just the concept of virtual races in general. Send us a voice recording, write us an email, or call and leave us a message and we’ll share your feedback in our next episode.
EAT
The night before the 5k, we went to one of our favorites, the Columbia Restaurant. Their 1905 salad, Cuban sandwich, and Spanish Bean Soup as well as the Crab Croquettes are all incredible items from their menu that we reviewed on our first episode and quick bites. (Can you tell we are celebrating the 2nd anniversary of our podcast over several weeks, even though it doesn’t officially happen until June 17th).
Our official feature for this episode is Big Ray’s Fish Camp. It is famous online for the grouper sandwich. Everyone says it is the best one around. We want to go back to have that, but we were craving Fish Dip and our cameraman’s sister said that we had to have the shrimp corn dog. Plus, a favorite of his mom’s was Grouper cheeks, and they have a buffalo version we had to order. We had local beer in cans and bottles. Their prices are reasonable for the delicious seafood they offer. They have some indoor seating, but most of their seating area is a big porch on the side of the restaurant. It has to be so nice lit up at night. We will return!
DRINK
81Bay Brewing is in a huge warehouse-like space that had a great bar, a huge projector with video games setup on the side, as well as a Farmer’s Market going on when we arrived. They also have an event room and awesome artwork all over the brewery from local artists selling it. Their sinks outside their bathrooms have kegs setup as their sinks for washing your hands! Their brewery is visible from the bar, and at the bar there are friendly bartenders who helped us setup our flights. Across from the bar is an entire wall that looks like an under-the-sea scene projected onto it behind the stage where they have live music on some nights.
I had these unique flavors while we were there but they had lots of tasty brews on tap:
- Here Plums the Sun 5%
- Market Spiked Punch 5.6%
- Coffee Porter featuring Lucky Goat Coffee 6%
- Guzumba Sweet Stout 8.5%
Dana had these:
- Thomas Hefferson Hefeweizen 6.1%
- Tangled Up in Brew Lychee and White Peach Blonde Ale 5%
- Real Slo Irish Red 5.5%
- Randy Marshmallow Peanut Butter Marshmallow Stout 8.5%
We would come back. Plus a dollar of every pint purchased goes to help a local organization called W.H.A.Y.S. (We Honor and Appreciate Your Service). It supports and employs veterans.

RED Episode #64: Listener Comments, The Tampa Beer Run, and a Tampa Staple, Chubby’s
Wednesday May 22, 2019
Wednesday May 22, 2019
RUN
First up, we asked for your travel tips for runners and we are happy to share them here so we can all learn how to get the most out of our luggage space while being prepared for a great runcation.
Then we celebrated our second anniversary, although it was a few weeks early, by running the Tampa Beer Run to benefit Humane Society of Tampa and My Hope Chest. It was a 5K inside of Al Lopez Park that offered four beer stops with local brews for us to try. The weather was great. The course was flat and offered so much shade we were jealous of every Tampa local who can use this park as a training ground. We got to meet cute dogs on the course and got a bonus beer at the after party. No medal, but a great pint glass and t-shirt have always been great souvenirs for this race. There was a food truck and beer along with a DJ at the after party, all contained within the park. The race offered a Lyft discount code for afterward and encouraged designated drivers. It was our third time doing this race, but every year it proves to be a great time with great people supporting a great cause.
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU, TOO! Next week we will be talking about virtual races and what we think of them. So, email us at info@runeatdrink.net or call and leave us a message at (941) 677-2733. Let us know what your thoughts are about virtual races you’ve done or just the concept of virtual races in general. Send us a voice recording, write us an email, or call and leave us a message and we’ll share your feedback in our next episode.
EAT
Chubby’s Super Subs and Pizza has been a staple in Tampa for 37 years. We bring to you the Steak Bomb, which is one of the best cheesesteaks we have ever had because it has a surprising ingredient of salami! A soft hoagie roll, peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheese, and the bonus ingredient made it so good! No wonder they’ve been here for so long, just off Bayshore and not too far from Asian Kitchen and Sociale, the places we reviewed back in February for the Gasparilla race weekend. It is another one in Tampa you should check out if you are in town for any reason!
DRINK
Now here are the beers we tried. All of them were carefully selected to complement the fact that we were running a 5k on a hot and somewhat humid day in May.
Beer Stop #1: Coppertail Independent Pilsner and Free Dive IPA
Beer Stop #2: Motorworks Brewing V Twin Lager
Beer Stop #3: Six Ten Brewing Tent Beer Lager
Beer Stop #4: Estrella Galicia Special Lager
Bonus at the After Party was one we’ve had and love, JDub’s Brewing Company Poolside Kölsch.

RED Episode #63: Travel Tips and Pints & Pixels from Huntsville
Tuesday May 14, 2019
Tuesday May 14, 2019
RUN
My cameraman had a work trip to Huntsville this week. We spent some time around some amazing exhibits at the US Space and Rocket Center. We stayed near the Von Braun Center and Big Spring International Park, which was a great park to run in right outside our hotel. When we travel for work or during a training week, it is important to take all the necessary running gear. This week we talk about what is essential to take with you when traveling to stay on track when you training for a big race.
Here are links to some of the gear we talked about in the show this week:
Away Travel Luggage and Packing Cubes
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU, TOO! If you have a tip for us to share on our next episode about running while traveling or the gear you normally travel with that makes it easier, email us at info@runeatdrink.net or call and leave us a message at 941- 677-2733.
EAT
Who knew that Huntsville had so many great places to eat! We continue our look at nostalgic places in Huntsville with Pints and Pixels. This place was a throwback to the 1980s, and we loved its theme so much because it took us back to when we were kids because both of us loved pinball and video arcades! But, their kitchen, owned by Anaheim Chili, nails some pretty incredible and spicy food. From appetizers like Chicharrones with Pimento Cheese, Texas Spring Rolls, and Adobo Skirt Steak Skewers to bowls of Pesole and Home-Style Chili plus so many others we did not try. This place knows how to spice things up!
DRINK
Pints and Pixels also had awesome local brews on tap, as well as top shelf liquor, but what we had to try was their inventive cocktails. Why? They are inspired by and named after some of our favorite video games that we played while growing up. Ms. Pac-Man Power Pellet was my favorite! But they also had a Gin and Sonic, The Frogger, Princess Peach Cosmo, Mario’s Power Up, and Luigi’s Liquid Green. Such a creative menu!

RED Episode #62: Running in Huntsville, Alabama; Toybox Bistro; and Straight To Ale
Wednesday May 08, 2019
Wednesday May 08, 2019
RUN
My cameraman had a work trip to Huntsville this week. We spent some time around some amazing exhibits at the US Space and Rocket Center. We stayed near the Von Braun Center and
Big Spring International Park, which was a great park to run in right outside our hotel. When we travel for work or during a training week, it is important to find a nice and safe place to get training done. I hate the treadmill, but sometimes that is the only option. Not this time. This park was paved almost 1-mile loop around a beautiful spring-fed pond with huge koi and ducks. A great place to do speed-work and long runs, if you don’t mind doing loops. The weather was great and not humid at this time of year, either.
EAT
Who knew that Huntsville had so many great places to eat! We will focus on one of our favorite places to go while we were there, but there are so many places we want to share. Stay tuned to upcoming quick bites and our next episode because we couldn’t cover it all in one show!
Toy Box Bistro is a bit of our childhood. Servers Debbie and Spider, as well as co-owner, Bill, could not have been nicer. The walls and ceiling were covered in memorabilia ranging from TIE Fighters and the Millennium Falcon to Hell Boy, Aliens, and Transformers still in their Japanese packaging. The food is original, flavorful, and just plain PHENOMENAL. The gravy on the pot roast sandwich is like a deep, rich demi glace that I could drink. The warm sour cream potato salad is also a highlight on the menu. They also have waffles made out of macaroni and cheese and a bacon burger for you spice-heads out there that is dynamite. (It is actually VERY spicy). We went back for their Star Wars “May the Fourth Be With You” menu on Saturday. It was their food with a great theme of course.
Sugar Belle is right next door to Toy Box Bistro and their cupcakes are the perfect ending to a great meal. Salted Caramel Buttercream with a soft chocolate cupcake and a strawberry version that is mouthwatering. Plus, they have several vintage video game consoles hooked up to tube TVs including an older floor television in a wood cabinet with an Atari 2600 hooked up to it! I played Frogger and felt for a moment that I was reliving a part of my childhood. I was a carefree kid again. Maybe that is why we went back twice.
DRINK
Straight to Ale Brewing is a local brewery that we visited, and their beer is available at so many local establishments, including other breweries like Under the Radar (which we will tell you about on an upcoming episode), Pints and Pixels, a grown-up arcade with great food that features classic 80s and 90s arcade games (which we’ll also talk about in an upcoming episode), and even our hotel bar at the AC Marriott.
Straight to Ale is a larger local brewery with its own kitchen (Ale’s Kitchen) that is making some amazing beers to drink on premises and for local distribution. It’s part of a larger entertainment complex called Campus 805, which is an old Middle School that has been converted into a combination of breweries, restaurants, coffee shop, an art studio, an AXE THROWING venue, and even a “secret” speakeasy behind a hidden door! Sounds cool, right? Well, that’s because it is. We’ll have more on all that…you guessed it, on an upcoming episode.

RED Episode #61: Talking Training After Illness and a Preview of Danger Danger
Tuesday Apr 30, 2019
Tuesday Apr 30, 2019
RUN
We were fighting a pretty bad upper respiratory infection last week. That got us thinking about how that impacts training for a race and what you should do once you resume training. Of course, you should always consult your doctor. We did that as well as reaching out to some great Facebook groups we are a part of to see how some veterans handle illness during a training cycle. They had some great advice. If you ever need advice or encouragement, the Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards and the Extra Mile Podcast groups are great!
EAT
There is a brand new restaurant in our hometown called Danger Danger. This week we preview some of their menu, including a delicious pizza and a taco special. We will feature them on an upcoming episode, but they are hitting it out of the park after less than a month of being open, and we couldn’t help but celebrate and share their delicious food.
DRINK
At Danger Danger, there are some tasty beers in the cooler to go with your takeout or counter service meal. We had cans of Cigar City Maduro Brown and Original Sin McIntosh Cider to quench our thirst this week while trying terrific food.
THAT’S A WRAP

RUN
We watched the 123rd Boston Marathon on Monday. It brought many amazing stories. We talk about everything from Des Linden returning to Boston a year after her victory in some tough conditions to Joan Benoit Samuelson’s run 40 years after her historic victory on the course in 1979. Runs like this as well as the New York City Marathon inspire us as back-of-the-back runners to work harder towards our own goals.
EAT
No. 3 Craft Brews plays host to Schnitzel Express food truck every Monday night. We happened to be off on this Monday night, so we decided to try it. Wiener Schnitzel is a pork cutlet breaded and fried. Theirs is served with roasted potatoes. The Hunter Schnitzel was pork served with a mushroom sauce. It was tender pork and crispy breading. The potatoes reminded me of au gratin style potatoes, but without the cheese sauce. They were soft and buttery. All-in-all, this food truck does Pork Schnitzel right!
DRINK
We headed to No. 3 Craft Brews to sample the food truck but also because we know that they have a variety of brews on tap from IPAs to brown ales, we can always find something to toast a night off with and No. 3 Craft Brews did not disappoint this time. I had I’m Fine from Red Cypress Brewery, which was a 4.6% ABV Sour Gose with key limes, oranges, and pink Himalayan salt. It was different than what I’d normally choose, but it was light, refreshing, and tart and went with the pork well. Dana had Dressed in Black by Edmund’s Oast Brewing Company. It is a medium-bodied sweet stout at 6% ABV. Two very different beers, but both are tasty brews.

RUN
This week we talk about our training plan and upcoming races heading into the hot and humid Florida summer.
In May, we will head to the Tampa Beer Run. It is our third time doing this awesome race and it was the very first one we covered on our podcast, so how could we pass it up? It will be a nice flat training run while we get to sample some new local beers.
Then we will head into summer, and we have committed to do the RunDisney Virtual Race Series that celebrates 80 years of Marvel. We complete a 5k in June for a Captain Marvel medal, one in July for an Iron Man medal, and one in July for a Black Panther medal. Plus, because we complete the entire series, we will have a bonus Marvel medal!
In July, we will head to Key West for the Hemingway Key West 5K Sunset Run, and we are so excited because it is a nighttime race. Can’t wait to get back down there and sample more island food and beverages from on and off Duval!
In August, we will have a big trip! We will go the Anchorage Run Fest in Anchorage, Alaska! So excited! We will participate in the Back 2 Back Challenge, which involves a 1-mile race on Saturday and a longer race of your choosing on Sunday.
EAT
This weekend, we got to try King’s Kitchen in downtown Fort Myers. King’s Kitchen does comfort food from all corners of the globe, with a twist. We had the Loaded Tostones. Tostones, pulled mojo pork, sour cream, and pico. They were delicious! It was a very unexpected sweeter twist by comparison to traditional nachos. We can’t wait to go back and have a meal there. They have daily specials and happy hour as well.
DRINK
We headed to a local brewery that has only been open a couple of years. But we can’t wait to go back. Coastal Dayz Brewery is also in downtown Fort Myers. It is a laid back atmosphere with a beach theme. The tables are bolted down and made of concrete with table legs wrapped in rope. They serve popcorn to munch on and you can order food from McGregor Pizza and Deli or partake in some awesome local food trucks on most days. We had a delicious flight that illustrates the tasty variety in their refreshing beer. We met Gary, owner and Navy Veteran. We are looking forward to going back and sitting down with Gary to find out more and taste additional original brews!

RED Episode 58 Fast and Furriest 5k, National Empanada Day and National Beer Day
Tuesday Apr 09, 2019
Tuesday Apr 09, 2019
RUN
Aimee had to work, so Dana went to a favorite race of ours here locally, The Fast and the Furriest 5K at Hammond Stadium. It benefits The Gulf Coast Humane Society. That race has it all. It is a flat course and the race is held early in the morning before the humidity that is slowly ramping up for the summer gets too bad. The real plus? Dogs! On the course, you get to run with so many adorable dogs. there are kiddie pools that double as water stops for the puppies. And he saw a favorite puppy that we featured on a quick bite last year, Tegan the Tripawd! It’s a great way to get in a training run, get a cute medal, be around some great pups and support a cause at the same time!
EAT
It was National Caramel Popcorn Day this weekend, so Dana headed to Wild About Popcorn on Saturday after the race to pick us up a couple of bags to celebrate. He brought home Dill Pickle - what an unexpected and incredible flavor. It was tangy and tasted legitimately like a dill pickle. The Salted Caramel Popcorn was so sweet and had amazing crunch from tasty caramel coating and just the right hint of salty goodness. Wild About Popcorn has great flavors and they do shipping as well as being a popular spot for locals. Thanks for helping us celebrate!
It was National Empanada Day on Monday! So we headed to one of our favorite Cuban Bakeries, Azucar, here in Cape Coral. We had their beef, chicken, and ham and cheese empanadas. They do it right. The crust is tender and flaky and the filling is warm and spiced just right. The sauces are tangy and compliment the empanadas perfectly. The beef empanada was served with a garlic and lime sauce while the other two were accompanied by a smoky mustard sauce. This place is full of flavorful options, so if you are local and live in the Cape Coral area or dropping in for a visit, check it out!
DRINK
It was also National Beer Day on Sunday. You know how we love beer! We were still dreaming of the awesome beer we had in Lexington last weekend, so we headed to a couple of local spots to get some Lexington Brewing Company offerings. Keg and Cow, a local bar has quite an extensive number of taps. I think we counted 49! There we got to celebrate with Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. Then we moved on to 10 Twenty Five. They are also a local bar named after their address with some great offerings on tap. There we found the Kentucky Blackberry Porter that we got to try last week on the tour of the brewery. It was amazing, just like we remembered! Not overly sweet but true blackberry flavor. It was a great way to celebrate National Beer Day!

Welcome to Quick Bite #73!
In this Quick Bite, Aimee gets a few minutes with Marcos Valdes, Chef-Owner of Papi's Mexican Restaurant and Bar.
While we ran the Bluegrass, Marcos was busy running around the restaurant, making drinks, checking on food quality, mentoring employees, and spending time with guests! The restaurant, which is located in an upstairs spot just a few blocks off the UK campus has only been open for about 8 months but the food, much of which comes from family recipes, tastes like it's been perfected over many, many years.
We started with the house chips and salsa. The chips were warm and the house salsa was fresh, with a slight heat and smokiness of chile d'arbol. We had an appetizer which is a creation of Marcos', a crock filled with poblano pepper and onion, with a rich cream sauce and baked with queso fresco. It's served with flour tortillas for dipping or making "messy tacos" and it is worth a trip back to Kentucky just for that! Marcos said the Street Tacos were his most popular item, and after having them, we can see why! Soft, doubled-up corn tortillas topped with beef, chicken, pork, or...hibiscus? Yep, Papi's has some amazing vegetarian and vegan options as well.
If Papi's is this good just 8 months in, we can't wait to see what the future holds.

Sunday Apr 07, 2019
Welcome to Quick Bite #72!
In this Quick Bite, Aimee sits down with David Carroll, Owner of Red State Barbecue in Lexington, KY. After we accomplished at the Run The Bluegrass, we decided to e xplore the food scene in Lexington and we had a hankering for meat...Lots and lots of meat. Red State Barbecue did not disappoint!
We tasted our way around the menu with tender, smoky ribs with a slightly sweet dry rub bark, melt-in-your mouth brisket, juicy chicken, a coarse-ground andouille sausage, a finely-ground beef red-hot link with some kick, and wings that could best be described as the love child of buffalo and BBQ! And the sides! This place is a MUST-TRY on your next trip through Lexington. It's easy if you are driving too, because they are located just a couple minutes off of I-75.

Welcome to episode 57! We just got back from an amazing trip to Lexington, Kentucky and we have so much to share with you!
RUN
This week the Run Eat Drink Podcast is in Lexington, KY to "Run the Bluegrass!" Run the Bluegrass includes a Yearling (3.65 mile), a 7-miler, and a half-marathon course, starting at the Keeneland Race Course, taking participants through picturesque countryside past storied horse farms responsible for many of the celebrated thoroughbreds. The course was stunningly beautiful and hilly and taught us a thing or two about terrain, preparation, and making adjustments on the fly. This race also has some amazing merchandise, a winner of an expo, and an after-party that's a blast.
EAT
This week we have almost all tastes covered. The food scene in and around Lexington is exploding and we found four spots you have to try if you are in the area. Smithtown Seafood is cooking up fresh seafood in a traditional southern fashion with their Kentucky Proud Catfish and Grits. But, they are also experimenting with flavors and textures not normally seen in southern cooking. Their Singapore Shrimp Wrap is putting an asian noodle dish, paired with formal breaded fried shrimp, and wrapping it in a tortilla! Crazy, right? Crazy GOOD!
Have a hankering for Southern BBQ? Look no further than Red State BBQ! This little spot on a country road by a motel and a horse farm is making local favorites like beer cheese with pretzels, brisket, and ribs with sides like macaroni and cheese and corn pudding. They have a variety of house-made sauces to let you experience regional differences in BBQ from Alabama white (Show Horse), to North Carolina vinegar, South Carolina Mustard, Texas hot, and more. Warm peach bread pudding is for dessert, so save room.
Looking for breakfast? We have you covered. Windy Corner Market is a little country store out on a rural road across from...you guessed it...horse farms. With lines almost out the door, these folks are feeding the masses traditional southern breakfast of eggs, sausage, and gravy, and some things that put a news spin on some old classics, like a breakfast po'boy with bacon, eggs, and fried oysters!
Finally, if you are in the mood for something from south of the border, who knew that Lexington, KY was home to some AMAZING Mexican food? Well, it is, and Papi's Mexican Restaurant and Baris serving up some old recipes and some new modern classics, like the Cazuela de Rajas Poblanas, a Creamy Sauce of queso fresco, sautéed onion, and poblano peppers served with tortillas for dipping or to make "messy tacos." Or how about some more non-traditional items like a hibiscus taco!
DRINK
Brewing and distilling are part of Kentucky heritage. We take you on a tour of some places that are keeping that heritage alive. West Sixth Brewing is serving up a variety of original beers that pair so nicely with the food from Smithtown Seafood which is adjacent to them. They are also working hard to improve their community through charitable giving and partnerships. Their Pay it Forward Cocoa Porter is a must-try!
Alltech Lexington Brewing Company is another brewer that is not only part of the city's rich history but a company that is maintaining that tradition. These folks make the ever-popular Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, but we got to sample several others including a Blackberry Porter, The Kentucky Coffee Cream Ale, and the Kentucky Kolsch. They also own Town Branch distilling which is serving up about 14 different spirits.
finally, Country Boy Brewing is a popular local brewery whose wares can be found all over Lexington's dining establishments. Delicious beers with catchy names are their stock-in-trade like Cougar Bait, which is a light, crisp, American blonde ale. Or Shotgun Wedding, which is a brown ale aged on vanilla beans.

Welcome to our second official audio episode of the Run Eat Drink Podcast!
RUN
This week, we are still at home training for our next big race! We are excited to get to Run the Bluegrass at the end of this month in Lexington, Kentucky. Jeff Galloway assigned us cadence drills, acceleration gliders, and quarter miles to hit in a certain target time this week.
We also saw some posts on social media this week about DNFs (Did Not Finish) at races. Most of the time, having been one who has had a DNF, it is really hard to talk about or even admit to friends and family. I consider it brave to talk about it, it is also courageous to take yourself out of the race to avoid further injury, and I feel like it is a great motivator for getting healthy and training for a comeback, having had a great comeback in 2018 at the Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend.
EAT
Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery is a place we talked about last week. Shannon Yates, owner and chef, put together a fundraiser for Morgan Wright, or Morgan the Moose, our local celebrity from American Ninja Warrior, as he headed to Atlanta to compete in and film his episodes for ANW Season 11! I know we talked about running into Morgan last week, but this week, we were able to get to his fundraiser at Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery and do a live interview with him. That meant we got to have awesome fried chicken and fish and chips that Shannon made for his fundraiser. So tasty!
DRINK
Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery also offered us the chance to get Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale by Lexington Brewing Company in order to get ready for our trip. It was a wonderful beer full of caramel and vanilla notes, but not too sweet, so it could stand up to the delicious food. Apparently, Lexington Brewing Company will be 10-15 minutes away from where we are staying for the race this weekend. I hope we get to tour the brewery! Rumor has it they also have a distillery.
