RED Quick Bite #88: Midnight Sun Brewing Company in Anchorage
Tuesday Sep 03, 2019
Tuesday Sep 03, 2019
It’s time for another Quick Bite! This is the last bite-sized bonus from our trip to the Anchorage RunFest.
We had a late flight on Monday following our completion of the Half Marathon, so we decided to explore Midnight Sun Brewing Company’s loft and highly recommended beer and food.
It was a short 20-minute Lyft from our hotel in downtown Anchorage to Midnight Sun Brewing Company’s loft and brewery. Their brewing space and kitchen are located on the lower level. The loft is on the second level and has indoor and outdoor space where you can enjoy food and beer. They have a kitchen in the space where they make some tasty food, and we got the “Off the Hook” Chorizo Dip. Yum!
We loved the “beer forward” board where, after you buy someone a beer, you can post a note telling everyone why you chose to pay it forward to that person.
In this quick bite, we talk about the flights our beer tender recommended, both a “light” and a “dark” flight. Each flight was inexpensive and had several tasty options for whatever pleases your palate.
We wanted to stay longer and sample more of their beer and food menu, but alas, we had to make our way to the airport. If we get back to Anchorage, we will make a point of getting there when we can stay for a while, have a meal, and enjoy a pint or two.
THAT’S A WRAP

RED Quick Bite #87: Beer Flights at Glacier Brewhouse in Anchorage
Friday Aug 30, 2019
Friday Aug 30, 2019
It’s time for another Quick Bite! A bite-sized bonus from our trip to the Anchorage RunFest.
We talked about the upscale celebratory meal we had at Glacier Brewhouse in Episode 77 when we recapped the Anchorage RunFest Half Marathon. Check that out if you haven’t because that is the way to celebrate!
Not only was the food great, but the original beers they have on tap are quite tasty, too. So we decided to break down the flights of beer we had as we celebrated the completion of the half and Dana’s comeback to the half marathon distance. We sampled 5 beers each so we could bring you a true tour of their original brews!
If we are lucky enough to make it back to Anchorage, we will be back to Glacier Brewhouse!
THAT’S A WRAP
Stay tuned for more from Anchorage. We still have some additional awesome food and beverage options when celebrating your accomplishments in Anchorage.

RUN
Welcome back to Anchorage RunFest! This week we recap our half marathon experience. This race includes beautiful weather with the exception of a really strong head or tail wind from time to time and beautiful mostly off-road course. It is mainly flat and scenery is simply amazing. Beautiful trails with picturesque water views, beautiful trees, and a paved course. The time limit is so generous and you get to interact with others on the course that are running the full marathon and the 49k race. Other runners on this course are so friendly! The water and sports drink stops as well as port-a-potties are plentiful so you have what you need to be successful. The medal is a beautiful metallic purple reflective color. And we ran into Bart Yasso on the way back to the finish line in downtown Anchorage. There was a complimentary beer from Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse after the race was over. We’d come back and do this one again!
EAT
After the half marathon we really indulged by celebrating at Glacier Brewhouse. We’d say that this is a special occasion kind of meal. Good news: reservations are taken on Open Table and we highly recommend them. We had an appetizer of Smoked Salmon Dip that was delicious. Alder wood grilled entrees are plentiful on this menu, including a Ribeye we had. We also sampled the Herb-Crusted Alaska Halibut. We each added a half pound of the Alaskan King Crab Legs because when in Alaska... you know what to do! We finished off the meal with the Original Peanut Butter Pie. Everything was so tasty and Travis was a great server! We recommend this place for sure. We will be talking about their beer on an upcoming Quick Bite, so stay tuned!
DRINK
Moose’s Tooth serves Broken Tooth Brewing Beer and when we were waiting for and eating the amazing pizza that we talked about on Episode 76 , we sampled a few of their original beers. Dana’s offerings were cleverly named Van Damme Belgian Strong Ale and Darth Delirium Belgian-Style Stout, while Aimee had Chugach Sessions Cream Ale and Hard Apple Ale. They have a wide variety and something for every palate. We wanted to try them all!
THAT’S A WRAP
Stay tuned for more from Anchorage because we couldn’t fit all the amazing food and beverage in one episode, as you can already tell!

RED Quick Bite #86: Matanuska Brewpub’s Awesome Food Options
Monday Aug 26, 2019
Monday Aug 26, 2019
The Matanuska Brewpub Downtown location was just steps away from our hotel in Anchorage when we were there for the Anchorage RunFest. We recapped their awesome beer selection on RED Episode 76. But they have an awesome menu of delicious food, too.
So, we ordered two items from their menu. We are going to break them down for you on this quick bite.
The first: The Shrimp and Artichoke Flatbread that was $10. It had a crispy flatbread crust with huge shrimp and big pieces of artichoke hearts as well as tarragon, mozzarella, sun-dried tomato, capers, and garlic. Every last bite was so tasty!
The second: The Alaska Pot Roast Sandwich that was $15. it was huge! The sandwich had a generous serving of pot roast on French baguette and topped with brown gravy and garnished with parsley. It was such a great comfort food option!
Matanuska had an outstanding variety of beer but also a fantastic menu. If we ever return to the Anchorage area, and we are already planning... we will be back and we highly recommend both their beer and food to you!
THAT’S A WRAP
Stay tuned for more from Anchorage. We still have the half marathon to recap plus some additional awesome food and beverage options when celebrating your accomplishments in Anchorage.

RUN
Welcome to Anchorage RunFest! This week, we recap Saturday’s events on our trip, including the Expo and the Anchorage Mile. The Anchorage Mile events included a Women’s, Men’s, Military, and Community Mile that went off throughout the morning. We had a great time running the flat course that looped 1.5 times around a great park where an outdoor post-race event was held with tents setup with games for kids, a truck serving coffee, post-race pizza, and hunting safety tips tent was set up. Then we got the honor and privilege to hear Bart Yasso, Jeff Galloway, and World Record Holder for Double Amputees in the Marathon, Marko Cheseto motivate us and provide us with wisdom ahead of the longer races on Sunday. Such great events to start the weekend off right! We will recap our half marathon experience on next week’s episode, so stay tuned for more about this awesome weekend.
EAT
Moose’s Tooth boasts the best pizza and beer in town. It did not disappoint! We arrived to find there was a wait. It is not on Open Table, so be prepared to wait, but good news... there is an outdoor deck with a waiting area around a fire pit and beer from Broken Tooth Brewing. We will recap the beers in a later episode. But, that pizza was amazing! We got a large so we could try two different kinds from the menu. The Call of the Wild included Reindeer sausage! The Brewhouse Favorite had chorizo sausage and Denali sauce, which is a unique ricotta-based white sauce with herbs and spices. Crust was a thicker New York-style crust. The wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly and the view from the outdoor patio where we ate was incredible. You gotta stop by!
DRINK
Matanuska Brewpub in downtown Anchorage was only a few steps from our hotel! Matanuska Brewing Company actually brews their beer in Palmer, but has several Brewpub locations in Eagle River and in Anchorage. We tried a variety of their beers and were really pleased with their selection. There is something for everyone from an IPA lover to someone who loves a fruit beer, and as you know, we love places like that. They have a menu and, the sandwiches that came out looked amazing. We would have gone back for the sandwiches, but we ran out of time!! 😞
THAT’S A WRAP

RED Quick Bite #85: Grilled Avocado and Ahi Tuna at Splitsville
Friday Aug 16, 2019
Friday Aug 16, 2019
RunDisney’s Virtual Race Series celebrates 80 years of Marvel. While we were up at Disney completing the August 5K in the series, we got some great food at Splitsville in Disney Springs.
Mike Crave, General Manager, sat down with us and took us through some of his favorites from the menu. The Grilled Avocado and Ahi Tuna is a unique dish that Mike shared with us. A halved avocado is grilled and filled with a generous portion of seared ahi tuna tossed in spicy kimchee ponzu sauce. it is topped with scallions and spicy mayo and served with sticky rice and crispy wonton chips. We had the most fun with Mike as he had us flip the warm avocado and squeeze it onto the sushi rice so that it mixed with the ahi tuna to create the perfect bite! Those wanton chips topped with all the goodness... it is a must for the sushi lover in your life!
THAT’S A WRAP
Stay tuned for more from Splitsville. Mike, was so nice to sit down with us and give us a tour of his favorites from the menu. There were so many amazing flavors that we couldn’t fit them all in one episode, so we will be sharing them as quick bites. RunDisney’s Virtual Race Series celebrates 80 years of Marvel. This month’s medals include the Black Panther medal for the August 5K and the bonus medal for running all three virtual races this summer, the 80 Years of Marvel. While we were up at Disney completing the August 5K, we got some great food at Splitsville in Disney Springs.
Mike Crave, General Manager, sat down with us and took us through some of his favorites from the menu, including the Filet Sliders. This appetizer has two sliders with thick slices of beef tenderloin topped with house-made onion rings and horseradish cream. The bun was soft, the onion rings crunchy, and the meat perfectly cooked! RED Episode #75: Anchorage RunFest Training Updates and Splitsville Luxury Lanes
Tuesday Aug 13, 2019
Tuesday Aug 13, 2019
RUN
These are our final training updates before next weekend’s Anchorage RunFest! Aimee had one last round of trying to find a run-walk-run interval that she feels comfortable with for the Half Marathon on Sunday. Yes, the goal is to PR, if possible, but you can never tell on a brand new race course what the unknown factors will be, so she is following the advice of Meb Keflezighi in his book, 26 Marathons, to have backup goals. To PR, to finish, or to do the very best I can to “run to win” my own race, as he writes about in his book. Meanwhile, Dana is continuing on with his physical therapy and getting ready to walk the Anchorage races. It takes mental toughness to stay positive and heal following surgery, and he is doing a great job!

While we were up at Disney completing the August 5K, we got some great food at Splitsville in Disney Springs.
This summer at Disney Springs, all of the restaurants are creating special dishes as part of the “Savor the Flavors of Florida” event. Splitsville created the Tuna Poke Tower, including seared ahi tuna, spicy crab mix, diced Florida avocado and Asian slaw stacked high and served with crispy wonton chips. These flavors were so fresh and delicious. At Splitsville, their focus is fresh and flavorful food and this dish was a tasty example of that.
DRINK
Splitsville also created a beverage celebrating Florida flavors. It was a strawberry sake spritzer including local strawberries, lemon juice, St. Germain, topped with rose-infused sake and garnished with a whole strawberry and mint. It was a refreshing burst of strawberry flavor that was perfect in the heat of the Florida summer.

Big Storm Brewing Bonus (VIDEO): A Chat with Brewer Kevin Long
This video originally aired as a Facebook Live on July 27, 2019. Big Storm Brewing Company released a series of Belgian Beers this summer. We were there for all five, sometimes doing our beer chat live and describing the refreshing and tasty beers as best we could. But we were lucky to arrange a chat with Kevin Long, brewer at Big Storm, so he could give us his expertise and vast knowledge of the brews and what makes them great in this series. Thanks, Kevin!
Their 2020 Hurricane series is already in the works, or so we hear, so this will give you an idea of what to expect next summer and tempt you to come out and get some while it is still here if you are near one of their locations in Cape Coral, Pasco, or Pinellas.

RUN
RunDisney’s Virtual Race Series celebrates 80 years of Marvel. This month’s medals include the Black Panther medal for the August 5K and the bonus medal for running all three virtual races this summer, the 80 Years of Marvel. Just like we did for June and July, we headed to Disney to run our last Virtual that was “not-so-virtual.” We headed to Coronado Springs Resort because we know from a listener recommendation that there are several running trails. Stephanie Swann, a listener and Instagram follower, sent us a blog post from a great website. We had heard of it on the Be Our Guest Podcast, but she sent the exact article we needed to plan our trip from Touring Plans. It broke down all the resort and on-property options for running. Several people in the BOGP lizards recommended the boardwalk and we did do that awesome path in June. In the article, we found the path around Coronado Springs. It did not disappoint. Might we recommend running it at night to see the beautiful lights around the bridges we saw as we ran. It was beautiful scenery, including the new Gran Destino Tower!
EAT
We have been hearing about Gran Destino Tower and the new restaurant up on the 16th floor called Toledo. It features Spanish Tapas, full entrees, and beverages. We had some crostini from their pintxos offerings including one with manchego and fig while another had tuna. Their cazuelas menu items that come in Spanish-style pots including chorizo, herbed goat cheese-filled peppers, and charred octopus with romesco and chimichurri. There were some nice flavors and I feel they will continue to develop and get even better.
DRINK
Toledo, at this point in time, really shines when it comes to their drink menu. It was my favorite part of the meal there aside from the view of fireworks. We started with refreshing sangria-type offerings after our 5K in the Espumoso Punch and Manzana Fizz. We love Cava, Spanish bubbly that is similar to champagne, and it was included in both drinks. One was red and the other white. Alla Prima Manhattan was the bourbon-based drink we tried. It had great flavors of an Old Fashioned that we love. For those who don’t want to spend a little less on drinks, the beer offerings were great as well. Estrella Galicia 1906 Reserva Especial Lager out of Spain was a tasty beer that Dana tried and for $8 it was a really tall and refreshing glass of beer.
THAT’S A WRAP
We recommend the cocktails and beer offerings here. The tapas were good and as they have been open for just under a month, and we know they will get even better with time.

RunDisney’s Virtual Race Series celebrates 80 years of Marvel this summer, and we decided to make it a “not-so-virtual” 5K for the July Ironman medal!
That meant the chance to fuel up for the 5K at a Walt Disney World Resort. We chose to get breakfast at Port Orleans French Quarter. Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory has breakfast options that are unique to the Port Orleans resort and celebrate New Orleans right. We had the Shrimp and Grits with poached eggs and the Mickey-shaped Beignets with Chicory Coffee Ganache. Plus we had the Chicory Coffee to go with these fantastic breakfast picks. We can’t wait to get back there!

RED Quick Bite #81- Cuban Coffee Queen in Key West
Thursday Aug 01, 2019
Thursday Aug 01, 2019
We had a great breakfast at Cuban Coffee Queen on our first morning in Key West for the 30th Anniversary Hemingway Key West Sunset Run & Paddleboard Race. This place is just off the water and steps away from The Waterfront Brewery that we covered in Episode 72 last week. It looks like a tiny little shack from the outside, but the line is so long there all the time. Why? An incredibly friendly staff and amazing food and coffee!
The Cuban Breakfast Burrito was so flavorful! It was so big, we split it. It had three eggs, American cheese, rice, beans, and mojo pork on a grilled tortilla. You can choose your own meat, and they have ham, bacon, sausage, chorizo, turkey or pork roll to choose from as well. But the mojo pork is where it’s at for this breakfast burrito! That mojo pork had citrus spices and the meat was tender and delicious in this burrito. This huge breakfast offering is only $8.50.
We washed it down with Cuban coffee. Cuban espresso with steamed milk was such a great way to start the day. This beverage is also offered with caramel or vanilla flavoring, too. It warms the soul and charged us up for the day!
Come wait in the fast-moving line for incredible Cuban breakfast!

RED Quick Bite #80: Listener Recommendation at DJ’s Clam Shack in Key West
Wednesday Jul 31, 2019
Wednesday Jul 31, 2019
We went to Key West for the 30th Anniversary Hemingway Key West Sunset Run & Paddleboard Race. We explored fantastic places for food and beverage both on and off Duval Street. On Episode 40, we went to DJ’s Clam Shack after our half marathon. It was amazing seafood and we only got to try conch fritters and clam strips during that visit, and one of our listeners said that we had to go back and try the lobster roll and Dana was curious about the Ipswich Fried Clam Basket and how it compared to the clam strips from our first visit.
My mouth is watering as I write this recap because it was the best lobster roll I ever had. The bread was buttered and toasted. The lobster was tossed in just enough mayo along with celery and a hint of tarragon. A squeeze of lemon brought out all the flavors. Can I talk about the lobster itself? The pieces of lobster are huge in the sandwich and cooked to be perfectly tender. The natural sweetness and briny flavor of the lobster... just incredible.
The fried clam basket is something you want to get on a special occasion because it is a bit pricy, but the flavor is worth it. The breading was crispy and it stayed on the clams. The clams The tarter sauce brought out the seafood flavor. They were meaty and tasty clams served with hot and crispy fries!
If you get the chance, get down there and try these two awesome items on the menu!

RUN
This week, we update you on the progress of our training for upcoming races. Dana started physical therapy. He learned that he’s gotta take it easy in a lot of ways post-surgery, even though movement is important to recovery. Aimee hit all three training runs this week, including a 19-miler! Mental training was so important to hitting goals this week. The humidity in Florida was brutal and it does a number on motivation to get out there and get it done. So it was important to break it into smaller chunks to get it done.
EAT
We went to Key West for the 30th Anniversary Hemingway Key West Sunset Run & Paddleboard Race and recapped it on last week’s episode. The best part about driving down to Key West is that you can discover great places to eat all along the keys. In Quick Bite 63, we featured Kiki’s Sandbar. We had unique and tasty Ahi Tuna Nachos. When we came back through, we stopped and decided to order them two ways: one with the tuna raw and one order with seared tuna. We compared what happened to the wonton “chips” and the flavor of the tuna. They are completely different, and Kiki’s is worth the stop! The view from the top of the restaurant is great, but it is also beautiful to sit on the lower level if you want to bring your dog and have the chance to put your feet in the sand!
DRINK
Florida Keys Brewing Company is a great brewery in Islamorada and they have a great deal going. It is true, we featured this place on Quick Bite 62. But when we visited, we focused primarily on seasonal offerings. This time we got more of their regular beers and took advantage of a great deal they have going. For $110, you can get two flights and two pints of their refreshing beer, plus one of their 64-ounce DrinkTank growlers filled with your choice of what’s on tap.
Here’s what we tried:
Weed line Wheat 5.1% ABV
Tampa Bay Brewing Company Collaboration Dragonfruit Mango Kolsch 5.4% ABV
Bayside Blonde Coffee Blonde 5.8% ABV
Resistant Strain Double Hibiscus Kolsch 5.3% ABV
Smelly Butt IPA 7.4% ABV
Bonus (Made by Keys Meads in Key Largo)
Keys Mead 13% ABV
THAT’S A WRAP

RED Quick Bite #79: Frita’s Cuban Burger Cafe in Key West
Monday Jul 29, 2019
Monday Jul 29, 2019
Off Duval Street in Key West, there are some hidden gems. We like to bring you some places tucked away from the action that offer amazing food and allow us to meet some great and hard-working people!
Frita’s Cuban Burger Cafe is one of those places. All of the food is cooked in a food truck but there is a house with an outdoor garden area and indoor seating as well. it is decked out with colorful references to Cuban culture. We stopped in to look around and a group of four vacationing gentlemen from South Africa (who now live in London) said they were there for the second time in two days! The food looked amazing. We knew we had to try it.
We started with Red Sangria. It was sweet and fruity. A refreshing beverage on a very hot and humid Key West Day.
Then Dana had a Classic Frita Burger and I had the Perro Cuban Hot Dog. The burger is a beef and pork patty seasoned with garlic and Spanish spices, topped with onion, frita sauce, and crispy fried joust julienne potatoes on a freshly baked Cuban roll. The hot dog has melted cheese, frita chili sauce, chopped onion, crispy fried house julienne potatoes on top, and is wrapped in a crusty Cuban roll. Both are $8.95. We want to go back and try more of this awesome menu!

RUN
We have come to Key West for the 30th Anniversary Hemingway Key West Sunset Run & Paddleboard Race. It is true, we have been here for other races in the past, the Southermost Half Marathon on Episode 40 in October 2018 and the Key West Half Marathon on Episode 48 in January 2019. But, the beautiful and picturesque setting of Key West called us back when we heard that the Hemingway 5k was at night! We miss nighttime races, so whenever we can take part in one, we do! This was a great and short race for Dana to test out his knee post-surgery. Although it was humid, we did it. So the lesson for a nighttime race is the Florida summer? Hydrate!
EAT
Looking for great Mexican food in Key West? Look no further than Amigos Tortilla Bar. The fire-roasted corn on the cob, chips and salsa, plus the made-from-scratch tacos are so flavorful! This little place is situated right off the busiest end of Duval Street, right across from Captain Tony’s and the Tiki Hut. It is totally worth stepping off Duval for these tasty morsels. Our favorite? The avocado tacos!
DRINK
Waterfront Brewery is in a big and beautiful building and they have refreshing original beers to offer in their huge and family-friendly space looking out over the water. We each had a flight of their original beers, including:
Reserve Flight, $8
Intolerance Milkshake IPA 7.1% ABV
Extra Terrestrial Peanut Butter Ale 6% ABV
Kilted Cowboy Irish Red 5.2% ABV
Irish Stout on Nitro 4.1% ABV
Flagship Flight $8
Island Life American Lager 4.1% ABV
Crazy Lady Honey Blonde Ale 5.6% ABV
Elven Orchard Graff Beer 5.5% ABV
Lazy Way American IPA 6.5% ABV
They had a game room perfect for families and they are planning a rooftop space that would look out over an amazing view of the water. Zarina was a great bartender. We want to go back for a tour of the brewery that they have available, too!
We are still looking for your recommendations for August! It’s our last Virtual 5K in the RunDisney Race Series celebrating 80 Years of Marvel! Where at Walt Disney World should we complete our last virtual 5K? Then where should we explore and indulge? Let us know! Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. Or you can call at 941- 677-2733.

RUN
RunDisney’s Virtual Race Series celebrates 80 years of Marvel. And we are so excited because... our medals came in the mail! You might have seen our unboxing live on Facebook. This month’s medal is one of my favorites... Ironman! We earned it running the path between Port Orleans French Quarter and Riverside resorts. It was so beautiful and a great change of scenery to get in our training runs! Dana was still taking it very easy post-surgery, while Aimee was doing her assigned speed work.
EAT
Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ turned 3 this past Friday, and we saw that he would be there to celebrate at the same time we’d be up at Disney completing the 5K. We featured his thigh high chicken biscuits last summer in Episode 35, which were incredible! But we have never had his Fried Chicken and Doughnuts or Hummingbird Cake, so we went to explore those menu offerings. Of course, we had to start with Fried Green Tomatoes because of our southern roots. All this amazing food, and we also got to talk with Art Smith himself! Turns out, he’s been a runner, too!
DRINK
The Basket at Wine Bar George is a great walk-up window at Disney Springs that offers the chance to create picnic basket and has a menu of small bites we can’t wait to try, but we were there because they have made one of our favorite treats from the Disney Parks into a refreshing frozen alcoholic beverage, the Frozcato. Pineapple Dole Whip, Vodka, and Moscato... what a way to beat the heat in the midst of the hot Florida summer. Over at Raglan Road, Dana had an offering called Tri Wishes, a malty Red Ale from Crooked Can. They offer it in the restaurant or at a stand outside the restaurant to cool you off while you are walking around Disney Springs.
Where at Walt Disney World should we complete our last virtual 5K? Then where should we explore and indulge? Let us know! Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. Or you can call at 941- 677-2733.
