RED Episode 91 Barb’s 5K, Bantam Pub, and New Realm Brewing in Atlanta
Wednesday Dec 18, 2019
Wednesday Dec 18, 2019
RUN
This week is the first part of our recap of Northside Orthopedic Hospital Half Marathon Weekend Powered By Jeff Galloway. It is a weekend that is near and dear to our hearts! It kicks off with Barb’s 5K, as in Barb Galloway, Jeff’s wife. Her race is a great way to start off the weekend and we tell you all about the race itself through Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, the race swag, and the post-race celebration at Orpheus Brewing!
EAT
Bantam Pub is really close to the Atlanta Beltline and it was a recommended by a friend of the show! They were serving brunch when we finished the 5K and it did not disappoint. They have a frittata and a country-fried steak entree that we really enjoyed! It is a nice small place with really friendly bartenders and staff. We can’t wait to go back and try the burgers and other items on their regular menu! We tried a couple of their original cocktails, so stay tuned for a Quick Bite featuring these beverages.
DRINK
Bantam Pub was near the Beltline and our next stop was right on the Atlanta Beltline. We headed to New Realm Brewing Company. We pass it each on the race course of the half marathon, so we wanted to explore the beer menu that tempts us right around miles 4-5 on race day. They have a huge menu of original beers, so we each had flights! In the flights, we found a wide range of styles and a couple of favorites we’d go back and have a pint of for sure. It is a huge and beautiful space that is ideal for a party. We can’t wait to go back and try their food, too!
THAT’S A WRAP!

New Realm Brewing is a place we have passed each year on the race course and we are finally checking it out! They have food and original beers that are tempting us to go right after we finish the race! Scofflaw Brewing Company has some cleverly named beer that we can’t wait to sneak into our trip!

We are so excited because in this very special episode of our podcast, we talk with Marko Cheseto. He is the current world-record holder for double amputees in the marathon distance. We were lucky enough to meet him when he spoke at the Anchorage RunFest in August 2019. He earned this title at the Boston Marathon in April 2019 and then broke his own record again at Chicago in October 2019. He shares his story of adversity and advice for anyone who is training for a big goal or overcoming obstacles in life. His positivity is contagious. He will motivate and inspire you. Listen to his words of wisdom in this episode. Perfect for a long run or commute to work to get you in the right headspace for your own goals.
EAT
We asked Marko to share his favorite pre and post-race meals. He says he is going to share his recipe for his pre-race meal. Have you heard of Ugali? Neither had we until we talked to Marko. His post-race meal is so smart, but it was an answer we were not expecting. Listen to find out more.
DRINK
Can you guess what Marko’s favorite post-race beverage is to celebrate his accomplishment? It will surprise you just as much as his favorite foods!

Tuesday Nov 26, 2019
RUN
We are doing a local turkey trot race that we will report on next week! In a few short weeks, we will get to do one of our favorite race weekends! Now it is called Northside Hospital Orthopedic Institute Half Marathon Powered by Jeff Galloway. This week, we are giving thanks and talking about what running has brought into our lives this year.
Let us know what you running has brought to your life that you are thankful for this year! Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. Or you can call at 941- 677-2733.
EAT
This year, we share what we are most looking forward to eating after we accomplish our goal of completing a Turkey Trot. (Which we have not done before!). So, what will we explore from our childhood memories of favorite foods at Thanksgiving? We share favorites that make us think of the best times with family at Thanksgiving.
DRINK
We have discovered two beverages that have become Thanksgiving traditions in our household. We talk about how we found mulled wine that warms our souls at holiday time and a cocktail that packs a punch that Bobby Flay showed off a couple of years ago on Food Network. It is so good that now we make it every year! Meet the Spanish Cranberry Sparkling Martini!

RUN
This week, we recap our Half Marathon at Walt Disney World in Orlando. We start with our experience at Hilton Bonnet Creek’s Marathon Weekends pre-race party. This is a big reason why we choose this hotel for RunDisney races whenever we can! Then we talk our strategy and course changes this year, plus weather, and the classic Mickey-themed medal. Finally, we got a great bonus medal for us as we completed the two-course challenge. There’s a reason Aimee looks so happy after this race, too...
LISTENER FEEDBACK
Sherry (@runsinaskirt on Instagram), Kristin (@kristersc on Twitter) and Steph (@justtakeadip on Instagram and at www.justadayinparadise.com) provided listener feedback for our episode today! They share their recommendations for the 2019 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival today on the show! We will intersperse their recommendations with Dana’s this week!
EAT
This week, we highlight Dana’s picks from the 2019 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival. We sampled the Lobster Roll from Hops and Barley. We tasted Butternut Squash Ravioli from the Wine and Dine Studio. Finally, as the rain came down, we tried the Frothy Ramen from Japan.
DRINK
We toasted our accomplishments with a non-alcoholic offering of Mango Bubble Tea from China. Then we had 3 Daughters Brewing Awake Coffee Blonde Ale from Hops and Barley. Finally, as we filmed our final segment in the rain (shout out to Katherine from the Japan booth for giving us plastic trash bags to try to keep dry!), we had Draft Sake in Japan.
BONUS: Steph’s recommendation this week flashes back to our Wine and Dine episode about Flavors from Fire from 2019. Check it out here!

RUN
This week, we recap our 10K race at Walt Disney World in Orlando. RunDisney knows how to do it right. The course had some key changes this year that we will discuss plus our race strategy, weather, and the beautiful medal. Would we do it again? Of course, because it is the first half marathon we ever did together and it has a special place in our hearts. Would we recommend it? Yes! If anyone is looking to get into running and accomplishing their first big race, this weekend has a 5k, 10k, and half marathon distance, it is one of the most friendly courses with the most support around.
EAT
We sampled flavors from the Donut Box, Africa, China, Canada, and Ireland during this trip to the Epcot Food and Wine Festival. By far our favorites were Canada and Ireland. Canada had their famous Cheddar and Bacon Soup with a Pretzel Roll that we had to compare against Ireland’s Warm Irish Cheddar and Stout Dip with Irish Brown Bread.
DRINK
We toasted our accomplishments with tasty beverages from the Donut Box, Africa, China, and Ireland during this trip to the Epcot Food and Wine Festival. We had both beer and cocktails at the festival, but I think the beer offerings were by far my favorite, including Tusker from Africa that we sampled at Animal Kingdom Lodge in the past as well as Brehon Brewhouse Killanny Red Ale from Ireland and both are excellent examples of light and refreshing beverages perfect for an outdoor festival in Florida.

RUN
This week, we start to recap our amazing 2019 Wine and DIne Half Marathon Weekend. We start with all the pre-race festivities, including Packet Pickup, Expo, and a chat with Olympian and America’s Coach, Jeff Galloway. He discusses considerations for those of us who are running the 2-Course Challenge and it applies for anyone who may be thinking about it in 2020!
EAT
Carb-loading for your races at Disney? Look no further than Harvest Bistro. Located on the ground floor of the Hilton Bonnet Creek, it has something for everyone in the family, including a dynamite breakfast buffet that we have had before as well. We dined there on not one but two separate occasions during our stay, so we had the chance to sample pasta from both the regular and Marathon Weekends menus. All four dishes were so flavorful and filling! What a great way to get fueled and ready for a successful race.
DRINK
Myth Bar inside the Hilton Bonnet Creek is an amazing bar and has a special place in our hearts because that is where we uploaded our first podcast episodes and shared them to Apple Podcasts (formerly known as iTunes...). Have you tried their charcuterie plate? If not, you should. But, more importantly, since this is the drink segment of our show, we have to talk about the Goldmine as one of the best celebratory beverages we have ever had. It is tobacco-infused bourbon, ginger ale, and “gunpowder” which is cocoa powder. It is strong, smokey but with a hint of sweetness. Such a great beverage to sip in the bar right by the fire pit while watching the Walt Disney World fireworks show, without having to fight crowds!!

This week, we talk about the taper that comes right before a race and your listener feedback about how to deal with it.
EAT
This week we were lucky enough to go to Coastal Dayz Brewery for their Oktoberfest celebration featuring food from The Meat Cottage. They have an incredible potato salad! Dana had the Brewery Plate with Bavarian Pork Roast, grilled Krakauer, Bavarian Onion Sausage, and brown pork gravy with Sauerkraut. Aimee got the Hunter Style Chicken Schnitzel with white wine mushroom cream sauce and French fries.
DRINK
We featured Coastal Dayz Brewery back in Episode 59. Coastal Dayz Brewery tapped their Oktoberfezt brew for their own Oktoberfest celebration. We love their nautical theme and the cute dog behind the bar! Their Märzen Lager is amber in color and has a slight sweet flavor with hints of caramel or butterscotch with a very subtle salty end to a sip of this original brew. It was tasty and went well with the delicious German food we ate that night. If you are local, swing by Coastal Dayz Brewery and give it a try!
BONUS!
We also talk about the upcoming Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend and our two-course challenge. We will visit the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival and discuss the food we might try at the different booths. Are we headed in the right direction? Let us know if there is another booth we absolutely must try!

RED Episode # 83: Speed Work Training and Key West Recap Part 2
Tuesday Oct 22, 2019
Tuesday Oct 22, 2019
RUN
Last week, we recapped our time running the Southernmost Half Marathon in Key West. This week we are taking what we learned and applying it to our training to prepare for the Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend. There is a tight time limit at Disney and we want to make sure we can reach the finish and explore and indulge. Trying to find the right run-walk-run ratio is on the list as well as making sure we reach the start line as healthy as possible.
EAT
Blackfin Bistro is a great option on Duval in Key West that is right across from Nine One Five, where we had amazing pasta before the race. It was a cute little place with a bar and some booth seating inside and a cute patio out back where they could have concerts and parties with beautifully strung lights for night events. Blackfin Bistro has a great burger that was recommended to us by a listener. It is an 8 oz. Wagyu Burger for $22, cooked to order and including port wine mayo, shallot marmalade, and smoked Gouda fondue. It is served with some perfectly-cooked truffle fries.
DRINK
The Roost is a small bar off Duval with a great ambiance and tasty original cocktails. They make their own ginger beer and put it in a Moscow Mule cocktail on tap. I had their house bourbon, one of our favorites, Buffalo Trace, in a perfectly made Old Fashioned. The bar seating is intimate and there are high back comfortable chairs at small tables all around. They also sell small plates, we couldn’t help but have fruit, cheese, and charcuterie. Also, we saw that they sell liquor, including Papa Pilar’s rum! It was a friendly little place off Duval that we’d go back to again. I want to try more of the small plates and original beverages. They looked tasty!

RUN
This week, we recap our time running the Southernmost Half Marathon in Key West. We report on the packet pickup, the race course, on-course support, and bling of course! This is Dana’s first official half marathon back doing run-walk-run intervals. For Aimee, it was a time to stay with Dana and try the short interval he was doing as well as a great training run to prepare us for Florida heat should we encounter it at Disney in November. Aimee was so proud of Dana! But we also learned by doing a race in the middle of training season what we needed to work on for the remainder of our training time for the Wine and Dine 2-Course Challenge.
EAT
Last time we were in Key West, for the Hemingway Sunset 5k, we featured some spots off Duval. This time, we had to carb-load at one of our favorite places on Duval in Key West, Nine One Five Restaurant and Bar. We have been there many times over the years, even before we started this show. We started with a cheese plate. We had a Brie from France, Smokey offering from Oregon, and a Parmesan-like cheers from France. The plate included port-soaked cherries, Marcona almonds, Florida Keys honeycomb and crustini as well as rosemary biscuits. Then we moved on to pasta. It is simply amazing. We had the Papardelle with Kobe Beef Bolognese, Parmesan Reggiano, and Creme Fraiche. It was hearty, filing, and the pasta was scratch-made. In the past, we have also had the lobster ravioli and beef carpaccio. All in all, we have not had a bad meal here. It is a more expensive meal than those we have featured in the past, but it is totally worth it. (They also have a homemade tonic for their gin and tonic drink. It is tasty, but we did not partake this time as we had the race the next morning.)
DRINK
After we achieved our goal, it was time to celebrate! So we had a drinks at Caroline’s The Other Side. We used to come to this same building when The Porch was here, and we discovered The Other Side once before this trip, and listeners reminded us about it and said to come get the Banana Bread Old Fashioned and Hemingway Daquiri. They did not disappoint. So much so, that we stayed for another round and had the Southern Godfather and an “off the menu” creation from our awesome bartender, Michelle, a Peanut Butter and Jelly Old Fashioned with peanut butter on the rim of the glass!

RUN
This week was not a travel week for us, so on to training updates! Aimee completed speed work this weekend and will complete a long run on the upcoming weekend to stay on track for SouthernMost Half Marathon, Wine and Dine, and Jeff Galloway’s race weekend! Dana completed a 9-miler and has lessons he learned on the road to help you on your next long one!
EAT
This week Dana takes us on an Infinity Hunt! This was a Marvel-themed, local event involving local taprooms and breweries! What a fun collaboration! Solving clues to locate all the Infinity Stones was hard work!
During the hunt, he got hungry and ordered food from Paradise Pizza to be delivered to Big Storm Brewing in Cape Coral. He has a recap of a chicken tenders basket and we talk about other offerings on the menu we want to try.
DRINK
Dana went to Eight-Foot Brewing, Big Storm Brewing, No. 3 Craft Brews, Big Blue Brewing, and Scotty’s Bierwerks, before returning to Eight-Foot to finish the final step of the Infinity Hunt. Don’t worry, he followed the advice we always give: Bring a designated driver or ride share to stay safe!
Big Storm Brewing - Munich Dunkel
No. 3 Craft Brews - Innis and Gunn Kindred Spirits Stout
Big Blue Brewing - Chocolate Milk Stout
Scotty’s Bierwerks - Irish Red Ale
Eight-Foot Brewing - Florida Wheat

WE RUN, EAT, and DRINK DISNEY on THIS WEEK’S SHOW!
This week we share your listener feedback about keeping training enjoyable when it gets tough. Thank you to everyone who sent in a tip, trick, or suggestion!
On this episode, we got to test out our really great audio equipment and talk to a special guest. When things get tough in your training season, it is important to be part of a training group or online group that understands and can provide support and advice. The Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards FaceBook group is one of the best. It was born out of the Be Our Guest Podcast, which is a fantastic podcast about all things Disney (Shout out to Mike, Pam, and Rikki!). The Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards group on FaceBook started because of a love for all things RunDisney, but members also support each other in all running endeavors and races.
We are sharing our interview with Mike Bankhead, who created the Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards running group on Facebook almost six years ago! It is almost 2000 members strong. Mike talks about his journey with running, creating the group, and shares his tips and tricks for a Disney runcation or vacation! He emphasizes that this group has forged very special friendships and members who cheer each other on have become like family to each other. He also shares his favorite places to stay and where to eat after you have run off all those calories!
He also shared great resources like The Magic for Less Travel, to help you book a magical Disney vacation and The Mouse for Less, which is the blog that Rikki, co-host of the Be Our Guest Podcast along with Mike Rahlmann, helps to maintain and that gives you tips, tricks, information, and great resources about Disney, too!

RUN
We were on a podcast called Experiences You Should Have with Gail Lovelace Menasco this week! We loved meeting her at Podcast Movement. She gave us a chance to talk about one of our favorite race experiences, the Donna Marathon Weekend in Jacksonville that supports the Donna Foundation in the mission of helping fight the battle to end breast cancer.
We talk about Dana’s progress on his road to recovery from surgery and Aimee’s training plan to prepare for the fall race season. In addition, we talk about how we mix up our runs during training by entering races along the way to change up the scenery of longer distances, including Southernmost Half Marathon. Although a repeat for us, it allows us to have a weekend getaway while staying on track with training and show you more of Key West as a runcation or vacation destination.
EAT
This week we bring you Wicked Streatery! After our training run over the weekend, we went out to Fort Myers Brewing Company for their Kegs & Eggs Sunday Brunch. If you visit the Southwest Florida area, you must have the food from this truck! Wicked Chicken and Waffles, Southwest Breakfast Bowl, and Chimichurri Steak Hash are all must-haves on the menu!
DRINK
Big Storm Brewing had a new release this week: Firestorm Black IPA. We break it down and try it for the first time as we record the show! At 5.8% ABV and 71 IBU, we did not know if we would like it or what overwhelming flavors we would get from this beer. It was surprising. Not an overwhelming pine flavor, but yet another great offering that we’d have another pint of from Big Storm!
