RUN
In this run segment, we talk to America’s Coach Jeff Galloway about tips for the current situation many of us find ourselves in as runners. He talks about how to stay positive and resources to keep us going and help in this stressful time. We are so grateful that he took the time to speak with us. You can find his timer and books as well as other resources he discussed at www.jeffgalloway.com.
If you have training or running questions for him, send them to jfg@jeffgalloway.com.
Jeff asked us if we wouldn't mind sharing this. Here is a link to the website that Dr. Ruth Parker, his medical advisor from Emory University, sent to Jeff if anyone has concerns that they may need to be tested for the Corona Virus:
Dr. Parker’s explanation of the website:
“This COVID-19 self-screening tool has been released for free, public use. My health educator colleague, Kara Jacobson, and I did the ‘health literacy’ review of its content, building on work we did with this team years ago during the H1N1 epidemic. Its content is based on the best-available evidence, and the team that worked to develop it is excellent (the tech for its support was donated by a great tech start-up).
Its purpose is to help people check symptoms (on a smartphone) to see if they need to go to the ER….hoping to keep folks out who do not need to be there.”
Jeff also talked about looking forward to virtual races now and fall races as a way to stay motivated. He mentioned three fun race weekends in particular that he has been to in the past or is planning on going to again this fall.
You can check them out here:
- Virtual Race Still Open for Northside Hospital Orthopedic Institute Half Marathon Powered by Jeff Galloway and Barb’s 5K
- Anchorage Runfest - August 2020
- Cannonball Marathon Weekend - October 2020
- Des Moines Marathon Weekend - October 2020
EAT
We have been cooking from The Healthspan Solution by Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever. This week we feature one of our favorites from the book, Lemon Tahini Broccoli Slaw. It is substantial and filling with chickpeas and has a satisfying smoky flavor with sun-dried tomatoes. There are so many textures in this salad and the lemon adds a tang that is very pleasing to the palate. We talk about the book and how it has supported our weight loss and fitness endeavors. This is only the first of several recipes we will share from the book in the coming weeks.
You can get the hardback version of the book here or the Kindle version by clicking here.
DRINK
We have been asked recently about our daily coffee posts. We say we love coffee, but what are some of our favorite kinds? Today, we talk about the El Rayo Espresso Blend from Big Storm Coffee. Head Roaster, Chris Ramsey, was on our show last year to give us some fun demonstrations. Now we talk about this specific blend and its cherry and chocolate notes. Plus, the perfect way to take a French press on the go with you with the Espro Ultralight Coffee Press. Check it out!
See our video interview with Chris here:

RUN
We ran the RunDisney Star Wars Virtual Half Marathon this week. We made it fun by dressing up in our Jedi Robes and carrying our light sabers. We report on our virtual race as well as participating in a fun Instagram #bringdisneyhomechallenge with Steph from just.take.a.dip, Amelia from the.disneydarling, Joe from dizhiz65, and Niels from capturingdisneyparks. Plus we highlight a headlamp that helped us get out there at 5am, much like we would at a RunDisney race. You can find out more about it and pick it up here if you need a little gear to keep you safe:
We finished off the run with a Moosehead Lager as per our RunDisney race tradition that we would head to Canada in the World Showcase at Epcot. We talk about what makes this taste like victory to us!
We want this show to continue to be an hour of the day that you can enjoy and that allows to have an escape from the stressors of the current situation, so we will keep bringing you our training updates as well as asking you to share yours, new race gear we are trying out that may be great for a run, virtual races we are running in our neighborhood, and special interviews that inspire will inspire all of us to keep going!
EAT
This week we highlight a local food truck that has just gotten off the ground but is putting food out there that makes our mouth water just talking about it. The Death By Taco 239 Food Truck is a spot that you should visit - they are slinging dynamite take-out tacos out there at Nice Guys Pizza every Monday night and may be doing a bit more throughout this week given the current circumstances. If you are local, consider supporting them while having amazing food. If not, this is just a highlight for when you come visit us in the Southwest Florida area. We will meet you there ANYTIME!
DRINK
During the drink portion of our show, we want to tell you about our favorites from our beer chat earlier this week because they are beers you should be able to get from your local package store or wherever beer is sold. Green Bench Postcard Pils and Cigar City Tampa-Style Lager were among them. We also included Untitled Art’s Peanut Butter Cup Stout and Prairie Artisan Ale’s Birthday Bomb! as favorites from our beer chat.

RUN
We know that things have not been the same lately, especially for us as runners. Over the last week, we have seen races postponed and canceled, even the prestigious and inspiring Boston Marathon. But we want everyone to know that we have seen you making the most of the situation from running virtual races to supporting everyone in the running community through disappointment. We’ve had some racing updates lately that will change our schedule, too. But doing this show helps us stay positive and committed to training. Running has been such a fantastic part of our lives. Through it, we started the show and have been so lucky to meet so many of you on the course and through our social media.
We want this show to continue to be an hour of the day that you can enjoy and that allows you to have an escape from the stressors of the current situation, so we will keep bringing you our training updates as well as asking you to share yours, new race gear we are trying out that may be great for a run, virtual races we are running in our neighborhood, and special interviews that inspire will inspire all of us to keep going!
EAT
We have sampled some pretty great food trucks locally here at the Fort Myers Brewing Company in the past. Their 7th Anniversary Celebration was so good that we had to head back to their Food Truck Rally. We found Mobstah Lobstah and, we are so glad we did! They do lobster rolls two different ways AND lobster tots! What amazing seafood coming from a food truck that makes us think of one of our favorite places in Key West: DJ’s Clam Shack. When we can’t travel, we know we can absolutely get our hands on some amazing lobster right here in town!
We will continue to bring you tasty food in our “eating” segments, from local favorites to tasty recipes on our plan that we are eating at home during training or some “flashbacks” that we try to recreate at home. Stay tuned and, we will all explore some great eating together!
DRINK
Fort Myers Brewing Company’s 7th Anniversary Celebration afforded us the chance to sample some tasty beverages. We decided to take some crowlers home to sample original beer from their menu we hadn’t had yet. Cypress Strong, Bubblin Crude, and Get Lei’d are all great beers in different styles from their menu! We break it down live on the show! We will continue to bring you some great local spots where we indulge in tasty beverages...maybe some brews we pick up and try on the show that you may be able to get in your hometown! We may even try our hand at recreating some tasty cocktails that help us flashback to some great memories from the show! So indulge and toast your successes with us!

RUN
This weekend Dana had to work. The assignment on the e-coaching program from Jeff Galloway on Aimee’s schedule was two back-to-back days of three miles, so Aimee decided to do the Scope for Hope 5K locally. The race day also includes a 2-mile walk. It was the 10th annual running of the event, which took place at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. So while this was not a travel week, we thought we’d talk about the experience of running a local 5K to support the fight against colorectal cancer as well as our weekly training.
EAT
We sampled some pretty great food trucks locally here at the Fort Myers Brewing Company 7th Anniversary Celebration. We sampled food from Wicked Streatery, Viet Yum, and Philly T’s Cheesesteak and Po’ Boys. In this episode, we talk about some of their tasty offerings.
DRINK
Fort Myers Brewing Company’s 7th Anniversary Celebration afforded us the chance to sample some tasty beverages. Both Dana and Aimee sampled some new offerings from their menu, including their 7th Anniversary IPA. We break them down on this episode for you!

RUN
We will feature Juliana Hever and Ray Cronise on a later episode after we have finished editing the interview together to share with you. We are still getting over the excitement and realization that we actually talked with them.
This week we chat with fellow podcaster Kevin Gwin of the Extra Mile Podcast and Extra Mile Podcast Galloway Edition. In this episode he talks about the inception of the podcasts he hosts and what inspired his Extra Mile Virtual to support The Donna Foundation. If you need support, the Facebook group he started and all the “loveable extra milers” who follow Jeff Galloway’s run-walk-run method to complete runs and races is great. All of the people in the group are so positive and share their running journeys as well.
EAT
Fat Point Brewing is a great place in Punta Gorda we featured on Episode 93 of our show. It was their 5th anniversary this weekend, and we love their brewery, taproom, and people. So we celebrated with them. We had some amazing food items that we had at the party. We both had brat sandwiches, one with sauerkraut and one with grilled peppers and onions. They were amazing with the Bru Man Chu Mustard. Because of the special occasion, they had a crawfish and seafood boil that was very tasty!
DRINK
We also got to sample some more of Fat Point’s amazing beer menu at the taproom. There was a special version of the Bru Man Chu that had been aged in tequila barrels and some charity beers that were tasty as well. Of course, we still enjoy Big Boca as a great California Common and Cape Haze as a tasty fruity wheat beer.

RUN
Training in March will include a local 5K race we are excited about, but we are also looking forward to the training run that will earn us the RunDisney Star Wars Virtual Half Marathon medal. The training runs this week will include short mileage as we recover from Donna Marathon Weekend. We will also start back to drills that will help improve our speed as we head toward higher mileage and ultimately the challenge at Star Wars Rival Run Challenge Weekend in April.
EAT
We drive to the 2020 Donna Marathon Weekend in Jacksonville, which affords us the chance to stop at unique places along the way. Linger Lodge is one of those places in Bradenton, Florida. Ever had gator, friend green tomatoes, and frog legs on the same platter? You can at Linger Lodge. You can also smell killer BBQ on the smoker and taste it in their Southern BBQ Chips with Avocado Ranch Sauce. We wanted to get the Bloody Mary that looks like a meal in itself, trust us or check their social media, but they only serve it on weekends. Darn it, we have to go back!
DRINK
Motorworks Brewing is also in Bradenton. After having their beer first at the Tampa Beer Run: Winter Edition and again at the third run of the event, we knew we had to visit. Their taproom and beer garden space is amazing. They partner with food trucks and local restaurants for awesome food, including Rocco’s Pizza & Pasta Grill. We had a great Chicken Parmigiana Sandwich while we recorded our first tastes of ... you guessed it, flights of their original beers. And they were tasty! Such a variety.

Veterans United Craft Brewery is a great little brewery and little did we know it was tucked away right behind the hotel we have been staying at for the Donna Marathon Weekend for the last three years! Ron Gamble, owner and brewmaster, takes us on a tour of some of their original beers and talks a bit about the story and historical significance of these tasty beverages.
We are splitting our coverage of the 2020 Donna Marathon Weekend and our visit to Jacksonville into three separate episodes this week. Episode 99 was the “Run” portion of our show. We also released our 100th episode - a video episode that takes us back to our roots- covering the “Eat” segment this week, and finally, this was our “drink” show featuring the tasty brews we had in in Jacksonville. EAT
We had outstanding BBQ in Jacksonville during the 2020 Donna Marathon Weekend courtesy of The Bearded Pig. We sat down with co-owner of the restaurant Chad Munsey to get a tour of some great menu items and a bit of the history behind this awesome BBQ joint. He also talked about the new location coming soon! This is a can’t-miss place when visiting Jacksonville. Just the sides alone almost defy description!

RUN
The 2020 Donna Marathon Weekend big race day is here! It is time for us to feature the half marathon and the completion of our Booby Trap Challenge! It was an incredible run and the community came out again in force to support us as runners and adopt us into the community. The bling was awesome once again, too! Plus, we sit down with survivor, Angela Sposito. She was so real and wonderful to give her time and tell her story of early detection and fighting this disease with the help of her family, friends, and loved ones. Her journey even started while Hurricane Matthew was about to hit Jacksonville.

RUN
The 2020 Donna Marathon Weekend is here! In this episode, we breakdown the start of our incredible weekend, including the race expo, the social shakeout run, and the first race of the weekend for us, the 5K. This is such a special event, how could we not take part in as many parts of it as possible. We break down these events at the race weekend. Next week, we talk about the half marathon!
Hear from the creators of this great race weekend on last year’s episode here.
EAT
The Donna Marathon Weekend Social Shakeout Run starts at Southern Grounds, a local breakfast spot that does not disappoint. After both the shakeout run and the 5K, we had brunch at Southern Grounds. The Brunch Toast is a tasty twist on avocado toast, as they turn the avocado into smooth and tangy guacamole and serve it topped with edible flowers, heirloom tomatoes, and a perfectly poached egg. The Grits Bowl has bacon, scallions, and a perfectly poached egg atop stone-ground grits! Finally, the pancakes are fluffy, light, buttery, and served with outstanding maple syrup. You can have a great breakfast and relax in this great Jacksonville Beach breakfast spot.
DRINK
Of course, Southern Grounds has coffee and other brunch drink options as well. We took the recommendation of the cashier who took our order. She did not steer us wrong as we had the Dirty Chai Latte. You can have it with whole milk or almond milk, and the almond milk option makes it a bit lighter so you can enjoy even more of it and go for the large! Of course, it was a weekend, and we were feeling like brunch drinks as well. At Southern Grounds, they serve beer and wine, so we got a sake based Bloody Mary with a scratch-made mix. It was tasty!

RUN
We had our final training runs ahead of the Donna Marathon Weekend this week. Aimee listened to her coach, Jeff Galloway, and just did easy runs of 30 minutes every other day. Dana completed his running schedule as well. Aimee’s goal is to PR in fun at the Donna Marathon Weekend. It is a race that you want to take in so much instead of trying to get to the end of it faster.
EAT
This week, of course, was not a travel week for us, so we decided to try something new here in town, Mangia Food Truck while they were at Big Storm Brewing Company on our rainy day off. They are fairly new in the rotation of food trucks we see at breweries here in town, but their food is amazing. We had a hot Italian sausage sandwich and a chicken sausage sandwich. They both tasted like the sausage was made from scratch and cooked with love. The spice was not too much and the onions and peppers that accompanied the sausage were cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of bite. The rolls they were served on were huge! Mangia Food Truck made such tasty and filling sandwiches! We can’t wait to go back for more. They say they are steadily getting into the rotation, so follow them on Facebook and get a tasty meal!
DRINK
While we were running last weekend at the Publix Fort Lauderdale A1A Half Marathon, we stayed at the Bahia Mar Double Tree by Hilton. After the half marathon, we had enough time to take a dip in the pool and enjoy a local brew before making the drive back home. They had Veza Sur Brewing Company’s Mangolandia. Veza Sur is a brewery out of Miami. This brew was light and refreshing. As blonde ales go, it was not overly sweet and had a medium body and carbonation. The mango flavor was subtle and not overpowering. It was a perfect post-race celebration beer! We were so happy when we found it at ABC this week at home, along with other beers in their lineup that we can’t wait to try.

RUN
Publix Fort Lauderdale A1A Half Marathon was our training run this weekend. We had to complete a 15-mile training run and the walk to and from the race would give us the distance we needed. Plus have you seen the medal? A turtle! This race has been held for the last 15 years, and they know how to do it right. The course is nice and flat for the most part. The expo was a nice size full of lots of great stuff for runners. The after party at the finish line was great. Did we mention the PR that Dana got! So incredible! We are so happy we found this race and hope to do it again.

American Icon Brewery has a taproom in Fort Lauderdale that has been open since March, but if you try the food, you’ll think they have been cooking forever. We had a burger special with a fried Mac & Cheese patty. The Backyard Beer Brat was delicious. We could have tons of the AIB Factory Beer Cheese it came with as a dipping sauce. We are fans! We wanted to have a bunch of other items on their menu but had to save room for the beer!
DRINK
American Icon Brewery has a great selection of beer. Both Aimee and Dana had the 1926 Hefeweizen, named for the power plant where they brew in Vero Beach. Aimee had the Double Red Ale and American Hero NEPA. Dana had the Light My Friar Belgian Quad as well! We will have to go back and try more of their menu for sure as long of these original offerings were very tasty!
THAT’S A WRAP!

RED Episode #95: Our Story
Tuesday Jan 21, 2020
Tuesday Jan 21, 2020
RUN
This week, we talk about how Aimee got us into running even before the podcast began and why that has been a sustained passion for the last ten years.
EAT
Then we talk about Dana’s health crisis that occurred almost two years ago and how that got us into plant-based eating. We discuss the books that led us down the path. If you are interested in any of the stuff we talked about and you purchase through our link, you not only save money, but we earn an associate credit, which helps keep the lights on and lets us grow the podcast!
Presto!: How I Made Over 100 Pounds Disappear and Other Magical Tales by Penn Jillette
Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, Revised Edition by Joel Fuhrman MD
The Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition by Julieanna Hever
The Healthspan Solution: How and What to Eat to Add Life to Your Years by Raymond J. Cronise and Julieanna Hever M.S. R.D.
DRINK
Since we have made this change, there has been one drink that we have on a daily basis. Water with bubbles but without sodium has become such a satisfying staple of our household. The Soda Stream is vital for us to stay hydrated and not get bored with the beverages we drink on a daily basis.

RED Episode #94: What #FOMO Made Us Do
Friday Jan 17, 2020
Friday Jan 17, 2020
RUN
We had a training week and along with it came a 13.5-miler on the weekend. All week leading up to the training run, we were seeing awesome photos from everyone on social media about running at the happiest place on earth. We were lucky enough to have days off together this week, so we headed up to Disney to get mileage there. It was so great to see everyone with their medals and a great preview of Star Wars Rival Run Weekend. So, we are postponing talking about our typical diet and training process until next week’s episode.
EAT
We had not yet tried any food or beverage offerings from Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios. So we decided to try a recommendation from a cast member, the pot roast at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. The Batuuan Beef Pot Roast had braised beef, cavatelli pasta, wilted kale, and mushrooms for $18.99. We spied the entrees while we were in line and that one looked big enough and hearty enough to split, so we did. (You can mobile order and pick up, but we wanted to see some of the entrees before we committed to one, and the line moved pretty quickly.)
DRINK
Also in Galaxy’s Edge, we decided to sample a lager with hints of lavender called Gold Squadron Lager and a non-alcoholic hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was thick and really rich with hints of cinnamon but not a super spicy flavor of it. It was a special, so you won’t find it on the website menu for Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. But if they offer it, it would make a great dessert or beverage to warm your soul on a rare cold day. Both were very tasty!

Fat Point Brewing in Punta Gorda is a local place we have been meaning to get to and we had the chance this weekend! They have food to enjoy in the taproom or for takeout. Their menu includes an Italian panini and a Cuban plus a pretzel with beer cheese that we got to try.
DRINK
Fat Point Brewing also has some great original beers on tap. We had Big Boca and Cape Haze but we definitely want to go back and try them all plus seasonal offerings!
